Description

(No Model.)
, G. H. JOHNSON.
' GRAIN DRILL CLEANER.
No. 453,356. Patented June 2, 1891.
' q/mcmaowo I wALXQ-W Q v Qbbomxm m: mums PETERS co, Moro-mum, WAsHINOTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARROLL II. JOHNSON, OF GRAIN VALLEY, MISSOURI.
GRAIN-DRILL CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,356, dated June 2, 1891.
Application filed March '7, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARROLL H. JOHNSON, of Grain Valley, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Drill Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in grain-drill cleaners, the object of the same being to provide means for cleaning the drills of earth which naturally forms thereon and clings thereto.
A further object is to provide means for accomplishing the above, which will be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use.
WVith the above ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinationsof parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation, and Fig. is a top plan view.
A represents a main head-piece secured to the bottom of the drill-box,.the same being rendered adjustable, if desired.
B represents a rod secured to the headpiece, and is provided with the rectangular and depending end 0, to which is secured the scraper D. The objectof forming the said end rectangular is to insure a true connection between the scraper and the drill. The bifurcated arms E are pivotally connected to the forward part of the drill carriage, as shown, the drill-tooth F being pivotally connected to the free end thereof by means of the arm G, which is provided with the stoppin H to prevent the drill-tooth F from tilting when in operation.
Serial No. 384,114. on model.)
To one side of one of the arms E is secured the open box I, in which is located the piston-rod and spring J, the same being adapted to bear against the rod B and hold the scrapet in contact with the drill F. A coilspring K is located on the rod B and bears against the piston-head J in the box I in such manner as to continually cause a downward pressure of arms E and the drillF. Between the head A and the top of the spring K is fastened an adjustable clamp L, having the set-screw M for regulating the pressure of the spring. The rear of the drill-tooth F is provided with a rope or chain passing through the beam U, by means of which the drill may be elevated. It will be seen that when the drill F is raised the piston-head and spring J will cause the scraper to bear against the drill and clear the same of anything sticking thereto, and, further, that when the drill is released the spring K on the rod B will force the drill into its proper or normal position.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a grain-drill cleaner, the combination, with pivotal arms, a drill pivoted to the free ends of said arms, a box secured to one of said arms, a spring within said box, and means for raising the drill, of a rod passing through said box, a scraper on the free end of said rod, and a spring located on said rod bearing against the box, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARROLL H. JOHNSON.
