HEEL PLATE AND BRACE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,853, dated May 26, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD SIEGRIST, of Hurley, in the county of Ashland and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and usef ul Improvement in Heel Plates and Braces, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a combined device adapted to serve asa plate or bearing-surface for the protection of the heel of a boot or shoe, and also as a brace to support and strengthen the counter of the boot as well as to hold the foot securely in position in the boot.

Figure 1 shows my improved device attached to the heel of a boot. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the complete device in the form in which it exists before it is attached to the boot. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device in the form it has after it is bent to or has been fitted on the heel.

My improved heel plate and brace is constructed of metal, and consists of the side plates A A, formed to.be placed on the under surface of a heel B of a boot and have their front ends 0 turned up at right angles to the remainder of the plates to fit against and protect the front of the heel. These plates A are to [it on the heel at its respective sides, and are to be secured thereto by screws or nails inserted through the holes D. A brace E, integral with the plates A, is connected thereto at the sides of the plates, near the front edge of the plates in the form they assume when secured to the heel, and extend upwardly therefrom to a distance which carries them above the heel of the boot, and then rearwardly, forming a band behind and about the counter of the shoe adapted to support it and the foot in the shoe. This brace E is slightly elastic, so that the brace and plates A can be sprung onto a heel of any size. Screws F, passing through slots Gin the brace, are turned into the heel of the boot and hold the brace in position. As it is desirable to insert the screws F in the heel near the middle of the heel vertically, the apertures therefor through the brace are formed as slots G instead of merely screw-holes, so as better to accommodate heels of differentheights. A plate II, having a conformation to adapt it to fit on the under surface of the heel at and about its rear end, and also to fit to the plates A, and with these plates to cover the entire under surface of the heel about its edge, is secured to the heel in connection with the plates A by screws inserted through apertures D therefor.

A heel-plate constructed in separate parts and adapted to be bent and conformed to the heel, as described, may be used on a large or small heel, and serves not only to protect the bottom surface of the heel but also its front Wall, and the brace retains the counter of the shoe in position, so that the upper or counter will not overrun the heel or permit the foot to slide about therein.

That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of two metal plates formed and adapted to be secured on and to cover and protect the under surface of a bootheel, and forwafilly-projecting portions of said plates turned upwardly in front of the bootheel, and a metal elastic brace secured rigidly to the two plates, extending from their side edges upwardly and thence rearwardly about and bearing against the counter of the boot, substantially as described.

' 2. The combination of two metal plates formed and adapted to be secured on and to cover and protect the under surface of a bootheel, forwardly-projecting portions of said,

plates turned upwardly in front of the bootheel, a metal elastic brace secured rigidly to the two plates, extending from theirside edges upwardly and thence rearwardly about and bearing againstthe counter of the boot, and slots in the sides of the brace adapted to receive screws theret-hrough turning into the sides of the boot-heel, substantially as described.
