CLOTHES-LINE OR HAMMOCK FASTENER.

SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 452.804, dated May 26, 1891.

Be it known that I, ISRAEL M. RUsHToN, of Minneapolis, in the county of `Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Clothes -Line or IIammock Fasteners, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for supporting clothes-lines to the walls of a room or other suitable objects, its object being to provide supports for the line 'which would permit of its readily being tightened and secured with any desired tension; and it consists generally in the construction and combination hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure I is a perspective view of a room, showing the manner in which the clothes-line is supported and fastened. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the clamp-bracket and its swinging sheave. Fig. is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail of a modified form of clamp.

As shown in Fig. l, the knotted end of the cord or rope 2 is inserted back of the hook 3, with the line passing between the prongs of the same. The cord is then passed around the sheave 4, which, with the carrying-sheave 5, is arranged to receive the same. From the carrying-sheave 4 the line is carried to said sheave 5 and to any other sheaves similarly placed, and is finally brought to the swinging sheave 6, which is pivoted ina suitable frame or yoke 7, in turn pivoted to the bracket S, so as to have free lateral swing. Suitable pins 9, arranged on top of the yoke on either side of the sheave, serve as guides to hold the cord in the groove of the sheave. Arranged underneath -the sheave on the bracket S is a shoulder or stop IO, and pivoted opposite it is the eccentric-clamp 1I. The cord is carried down on the sheave alongside the shoulder or stop IO, and the handle 12 of the clamp being thrown downward, the clamp bears against Serial No. 328.573. (No model.)

the cord and presses it firmly against the shoulder. Suitable teeth or notches arranged upon the end or periphery of the clamp engage the cord and prevent its slipping. The cord may thus be left slack to receive its load, and then,by pulling downward upon the end I3, may be drawn tight and secured by means of the clamp, as described. rIhe rope maybe instantly released by lifting the handle I2 of the clamp and freeing lthe cord.

Instead of the notches on the periphery of the clamp, I may prefer to use a rubber band 14 upon the clamp 15, as shown in detail in Fig. 5, which will, from its character, firmly secure the cord Without wearing the same, as the notches or teeth tend to do.

Vhile I have shown and described these devices as fastening and supports for clotheslines, it is evident that they can be used Vfor securing lines in similar positions for other purposes, particularly as in supporting hammocks, the hook-bracket being used for one end of the cord and the clamp-bracket for the other. It is evident also that any number of carrying-sheaves necessary may be used between the hook-bracket and the clamp-bracket to secure the proper support for the cord.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a line-fastener, with the bracket 8,of the laterally-swinging frame or yoke 7, pivoted on said bracket, the sheave 6, pivoted in said frame, guide-pins 9, projecting from the upper surface of said yoke on opposite sides of said sheave, the stop l0, arranged below said sheave, and the eccentric-clamp Il, arranged opposite said stop, substantially as described.
