Application June 5, 1943, Serial No. 489,824
.2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes lines and more particularly to means for supporting spaced parallel flights of the line to posts or other supporting structures.
An important object of the invention is to provide a single strand of rope or other flexible member arranged in spaced parallel flights between a pair of end bars and providing means for securing the flights in adjusted position to the bars.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described'and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of one end of the clothes line.
Figure 3 is a detail of the rope or cable forming the line.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of one of the end bars, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on a line 5--5 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numerals 5 and 6 designate a pair of rigid bars, the bar 5 having a notch 1 adjacent one end for attaching one end of a clothes line or cable 8 thereto.
Openings 9, it, H and I2 are formed in the bars adjacent the ends thereof, the openings 9 I and II each having a pair of short ropes or cables I3, 14 and I inserted therethrough and knotted at one end to prevent withdrawal of the ropes, while the other ends of the ropes l3, l4 and I5 are provided with rings l3, I l and [5, respectively, for engaging upper and lower hooks l6 and I1 secured to a post l8 or other suitable support.
One of the ropes l3 or M is attached to the upper hook of the post while the other ropes l3 and I4 are attached to the lower hook in the manner indicated in Figure 1.
In the opening l2 a single short rope I9 is secured as indicated above for attaching to either the upper or lower hook at that end of the device and the other end of the rope 8 is also inserted through the opening l2 and is provided with a ring 20 for attaching to the other of said hooks.
Spaced knots 2| are formed in the rope 8 at opposite sides of the bar 6 to prevent slipping of the rope through the opening l2.
The bar 5 is also formed with openings 22 and 23 and the bar 6 is formed with a pair of openings 24 and 25 adjacent one end, the rope 8 being inserted through all of said openings to form spaced parallel flights 26, 21 and 28.
The flights 26 and 21 are secured in adjusted position under the desired tension by means of clamps 29 and 30 positioned respectively in the openings 24 and 25. Each clamp comprises a block 3| having an inclined toothed plate 32 along one edge for wedging engagement with the rope, a ball 33 being secured to the block and extending along an opposite edge of the block in spaced relation therefrom to form a slot 34 in which a pin 35 is received for adjustment of the block thereon in its opening to tighten or loosen the clamp as desired.
It is believed the details of construction, operation and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A clothes line comprising a pair of bars having spaced openings therein, flexible means attached at one end to one of the bars and in serted through the openings of both bars to arrange the flexible means in flights between the bars, vertical pins mounted on one of said bars in certain of said openings, a rope clamp slidably mounted horizontally on said pins in each of the said openings and engaging the flexible means to secure the latter in adjusted position, said clamps being retained in the openings by said pins when the flexible means is removed, and means for securing the bars in a horizontal position respectively to spaced apart supporting structures.
2. A clothes line comprising a pair of bars having spaced openings therein, a flexible member inserted through the openings to provide a plurality of spaced parallel flights extending between the bars, pins positioned in certain of said openings transversely of the flexible member, clamps slidably mounted in the openings on the pins and having wedging engagement with the flexible member to secure the latter in adjusted position in the openings, said clamps being retained in the openings by said pins when the flexible means is removed, and means for securing the bars in a horizontal position respectively to spaced apart supporting structures.
