Description

110. 452,721. Patented May 19, 1891.
-the plug in.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EBENEZER BERY SAXTON AND ELMER ELSVORTH SAXTON, OF OOLDVATER, MICHIGAN.
PLUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,721, dated May 19, 1891.
Application filed September 17, 1890. Serial No. 365,213. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EBENEZER BERRY SAXTON and ELMER ELsWoRTH SAXTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Coldwater, in the county 'of Branch and State of llfichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plugs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Y l
This invention relates to a plug or wedge for use in the construction of buildings Or other structures of brick or stone where it is desirable to attach Wood-work or finishing of any kind to said structure or building.
The object of the invention is to provide a plug that can be placed in position during the laying of the wall or other structure and which can be expanded after the wall has set to insure its obtaining a firm frictional bearing on the opposing sides of the bricks between which the Wedge or plug is inserted. Heretofore it has been the practice to dig the mortar out from between the bricks and drive This process is tedious and results in a loosening of the bricks and waste of time.
The improvement consists of a block to be set in joint between the bricks during the process of laying up of the wall or structure, said block having a kerf and a key to be driven into the said kerf to expand the block. The kerf is preferably V-shaped and the key is of corresponding shape.
The improvement consists of the novel features, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of a portion of a brick Wall, showing the application of the invention, the key and block being in position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the block in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the block. Fig. 4 isa perspective View of the key.
The block A, preferably of wood, may be of any length, width, and thickness to suit the class of work for which it is designed, and is provided with the kerf a, which is designed to receive the key B. The kerf is V-shaped and the key is of correspondingsha-pe.
In using the invention the block is placed in the joint between the bricks or stones at the required place, the open side of the kerf being exposed. (See Fig. 2.) After the Wall is up and set the key B is driven in the kerf in the block and expands the same and causes it to bind firmly against the sides of the bricks.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A plug for the purpose specified, coniprisinga block having a kerf, and a key to be driven into the said kerf in the block, substantially as described.
2. A plug for the purpose set forth, coinposed of a block having a V-shaped kerf formed therein, and a key of corresponding shape and adapted to be driven into the said kerf, substantially as specilied.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ERENEZER BERRY SAXTON. ELMER ELswoRTn sAxToN.
