Application filed October 11, 1920. Serial No. 416,038.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN A. MoIvon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Edmonton, Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in arches and more particularly to a reinforcing means there or. t
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a reinforcing means for arches and the like which provides against any unof the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of reinforcing means for arches which will prevent any undesired dropping of the key stones or other portions of the arch, caused by shrinkage of materials.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an arch reinforcement by means of which segmental arches and the like over square top doors, windows, etc, can be dispensed with.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of an arch reinforcement in which there is no metal exposed or subjected to corrosion after the arch is completed.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an arch in which the centering can be removed with the least possihledelay.
A still further object of the invention re sides in the provision of an arch reinforcement, which can be used equally as well with either concrete or brick work, and which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and etlicient in use and readily operated.
WVith the above and other objects in View, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations,- combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present application and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of an arch showing my improved reinforcing member therein;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of an arch having the reinforcing means therein;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View taken through the arch; and,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4:4= of Figure 3.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 4 denotes in general an arch constructed in accordance with the present in vention and having the reinforcing member 5 imbedded therein.
This reinforcing member consists preferably of a rectangular sheet of material 1, bent upon itself as at 6 longitudinally of its length to form a pair of equi-sized, spaced side members 7. The side members 7 are each provided with a plurality of openings or perforations arranged as shown in Figure 1. t
The arch may be constructed from concrete, brick or the like, but in the present instance is composed of brick for the purpose of illustration. The facing bricks 13 in the strut portion of the arch have imbedded in the mortar 14L which holds them together with their inner ends crimped as at 9 to prevent displacement, keys 10, the outer ends of which are curved downwardly as at ll to extend through the openings 12 in the reinforcing member 5 above referred to.
The ends of the member 5 extend a suflicient distance over the sides of the arch to afford a substantial bearing surface and have angle members 8 secured thereto by riveting or the like which rest in the said sides of the arch and firmly support the member 5 and hold it against undesired tilting.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will he manifest that a reinforcing means for arches and the like is provided, which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
It should be understood in this connection, that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims comprising a sheet of material bent upon;i t self to form spaced side members, said side members having openings formed therein, the openings of the said side members being arranged in alignment, angle members secured to the free edges of the side members upon opposite sidesand'ends thereof and forming a support for the side members and resting upon the s1des 01- the arch, faclng members for the arch engaging the opposite sides of the side members, said facing members being spaced apart, mortar inserted between the facing members for securing them together, keys embedded in the mortar between the side members, said keys being disposed at an angle to the side members the outer ends of the keys being curved to lock within the mortar, and the opposite ends of the keys being extended from the aligning openings in the side members and bent downwardly to lock them in position, substantially as and "for the purposes set forth.
