Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. OORNELISON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGN OR TO rlI-IE AMERICAN ROLL PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
l ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,690, dated May 19, 1891.
Application filed June 7, 1890.
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN I-I. CORNELISON, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in machines for holding and cutting wrapping-paper; and myinvention consists in features of noveltyhereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is an elevation of my improved machine. Fig. II is a side View, and Fig. III is a side view illustrating a modification.
Referring to the drawings, l represents a suitable base,to which standards 2 aresecured. On the upper end of each standard (there is a standard at each end of the machine) is a cross-head 3 4. To the ends 3 of the crossheads levers 5 are pivoted at 6.
7 represents links pivoted at 8 to the upper ends of thelevers 5 and form therewith toggle levers. These links 7 are provided with slotted ends 9, fitting the journals 10 of the spindle Aupon which the roll 1l of paper is wound. The journals l() rest on the cross-heads 3 4, as shown in Fig. II. The outer ends 4 of the cross-heads are preferably curved upwardly, as shown at 4"', Fig. II, and on the extremities of the ends 4 of the cross-heads are projections or heads 4b, which prevent the journals 10 being moved off the cross-heads as the roll of paper becomes exhausted.
l12 represents a knife secured to the upper ends of the levers 5 and which has a cuttingedge 121. The knife is preferably curved to substantially conform to the contour of the roll, as shown in Fig. II. As the size of the roll decreases, it is forced along the crossheads from the position shown in full lines, Fig. II, to the position shown in dotted lines, the space between the levers 5 and the links 7 widening or opening out and the knife falling so as always to remain in contact with the surface of the roll. It will be seen that as the roll decreases in size and therefore becomes lighter its retrograde movement is prevented by the togglelevers, which are Serial No. 354,581. (No model.)
constantly approaching a horizontal position with a gradual increase of pressire on the journals of the rolls, and the result of this is that a gradually-increasing pressure is maintained between the knife and roll, the decrease or deficiency in the weight of the roll, which would ordinarily prevent obtaining sufflcient pressure to sever the paper, being counteracted by the increased pressure of the toggle-levers.
To partly equalize or moderate the constantly-increasin g pressure between the knife and roll when theroll is almost exhausted, I provide the inclines 4 of the ends 4 of the arms upon which the journals 10 of the spindle of the roll move, so that no trouble will be eX- perienced in severing even the last portion of paper.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. III the knife 12 is secured to the outer ends of bell-crank levers 16, which are pivoted at 17 to standards 2. The standards have ini clined extensions 13, against which bear a roller 14, journaled in the upper ends of links 15, which are connected attheir lower ends to the inner ends of the bell-crank levers 16. In this form of my invention the parts move from the position shown in full lines, Fig. III, toward the position shown in dotted lines as the size of the roll decreases, and as the size of the roll diminishes the weight 14 has a more direct bearing upon the inner ends of the bell-crank-levers 16, and thus compensates for the decreased size of the roll by holding the knife with greater pressure against the roll when it is small than when it is large.
I claim as my invention-M 1. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the
combination of a suitable support for the roll` of paper, levers pivoted to the supports, a knife carried by the pivoted levers, andlinks pivoted to the levers and which act on the roll IOO ing on the eross-heads, and links pivoted to the levers and resting on the journals of the roll of paper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of suitable supports, cross-heads on the upper ends of the supports, levers pivoted to one end of the cross-heads, a knife secured to the levers, a roll of paper resting on the cross-heads, and links pivoted to the levers and resting on the journals of the roll of paper, said knife being forlned to fit the contour of the roll and havinga eutting-edge removed from the pivot-point of the knife, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of the supports, cross-heads on the upperrends of the supports and having ends 4,provided with inelines clevers hinged to the ends 3 of the cross-heads, a knife secured to the upper ends of the levers, and links pivoted to the upper ends of the levers and resting on the journals of the roll of paper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of suitable standa1'ds,erossl1eads 3 l, seeured to the upper ends of the standards, the ends 4, having inelines 4 and projeetions 4b, levers pivoted to the ends 3 of the orossheads, a knife secured to the levers, and links pivoted to the upper ends of the levers and slotted at their lower ends to fit the journals of the roll of paper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
(j. In a rollpaper holder and cutter, the combination of suitable standards supporting a roll of paper, toggle-levers pivoted to the roll-supporting frame, and a knife secured to the toggle-levers, substantially as herein set forth.
7. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of suitable standards provided with horizontal ways for the roll-supporting spindle to travel on, and a knife, with suitable toggle-levers carrying said knife and actuating the roll of paper in its horizontal Ways, substantially as herein set forth.
JOHN ll. CORNELISON.
