Description

(No Model.)
F. MEINZBR.
CLOTHES LINE REEL.
P l T S 0 IIIU UNITED s STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED. MEINZER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
CLOTHES-LINE REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,275, dated May 12, 1891. Application ledOotober Z1, 1890. Serial No. 368,776. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that l, FEED. MEINZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clothes-line reels; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a casing for the reel, said casing having the sliding cover With provisions for locking the same.
Another object is to provide for the attachment of the handle and the ratchet-Wheel upon either end, as occasion may require. I provide holders or clamps for retaining the device in position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention Will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof Will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the 'accompanying drawings, Which, with the let` ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in Which#- Figure l is a central longitudinal section through my improved device.v Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the same. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View in top plan With the cover removed.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
lteferring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the inelosing case, preferably of sheet metal, having circular heads A', the upper portions of which are flanged inwardly, as shown at a in Figs. l and The surrounding Wall of this case does not extend entirely around, but is so constructed as tofprovide an opening b, the upper edges of the metal being bent over upon opposite sides of the opening to form' guidegrooves for the sliding cover. This is shown best in Fig. 2, wherein it Will be seen that the metal is bent over at c in close proximity to the outer Wall of the case and may be there secured by solder, if desired, the metal then being bent outwardly and upwardly to form a groove or channel d, and the outer Wall of said channel preferably crimped or rolled or otherwise disposed of, as shown at e in Fig. 2.
C designates the cover, Which is of curved outline to complete the cylindrical contour of the case, as seen best in Fig. 2, the edges thereof being designed to work within the channels d, as seen in said iigure. The cover is Without depending ends, and upon its upper face is provided with a suitable handle, as C. Upon one end of the cover there is provided a downwardly-extending lug c', provided with an aperture and designed to engage a pin f, projecting from one end or head of the case, as seen in Fig. l. To the other end of the cover there is hinged a hasp D, the slot d of Which is designed to receive the staple E on the end or head of the case, as seen in Fig. l, and a suitable lock may be provided to lock the parts. The cover is designed to slide endwise into or out of position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l. When the cover is locked, the guide-grooves therefor prevent ingress of Water to the interior of the case.
F are clamps secured to the case in any suitable manner and having at their outer ends the vertical parallel portions f', one of Which is provided With a screw-threaded boss f2, through which passes the thumb-screw F', as seen in Fig. 2, said thumb-screw carrying at its inner end a disk g to bear against the device to which the case is clamped, as will be readily understood.
G is a shaft having bearings in the ends or heads of the case, as seen in Fig. l, both ends of the shaft` projecting and being squared or otherwise constructed to receive a suitable crank-handle, as G', which is made removable, so as to be used upon either end, as may be desired. H is a ratchet-Wheel upon this shaft, and I is a pawl engaging the ratchet-Wheel to prevent retrograde movement of the parts. I
provide a pawl upon each end of the case and .heads or disks retaining the line against end- Wise movement or Wear, as Will be readily understood.l
To one end of the drum l aflix a metallic collar L, as seen in Figs. l and 3, and l is a IOO hook or staple, to which one end of the line M is designed to be secured in any suitable manner, said line being designed to be wou 11d upon or unwound from the drum, as occasion arises.
What I claim as new isl. The combination, with the case having cover-receiving grooves and the reel, of the sliding cover working in said grooves and provided with a suitable handle and with a lug c at one end and a hinged hasp at the other, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the case having cover-receiving grooves, a projection f at one end, and a staple E at the other, of a cover adapted to slide in said grooves and having at one end an apertured lug c to engage the projection and at the other end a hinged hasp to engage the staple, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the case and its removable cover, of the reel within the case, its shaft projecting at both ends, a pawl upon each end of the case, a removable handle for operating the shaft, and a removable ratchetwheel, as set forth.
Li. The combination, with the inclosing case having cover-receiving grooves, of the brackets or clamps secured to said case, the sliding cover with means for locking the same, the reel-shaft, the drum thereon, the disks, the collar on one end of the drum, having means for attaching the line thereto, the pawls upon the ends of the case, and the removable crank-handle and ratchet-wheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED. MEINZER.
