MACHINE FOR UNITING THE SIDES OF CARD-BOARD BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,585, dated May 5, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEF EIL, manufacturer, asubj ect of the Emperorof Austria-Hungary, residing at Weinhaus, near Vienna, in the Province of LowerAustria, in theEmpire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Uniting the Sides of Card-Board Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suclt as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to machines for uniting the sides of card-board and other boxes or receptacles, and has for its object to provide means whereby the union of the sides of boxes is effected mechanically by means of a web or strip of material coated with an adhesive material.
The invention consists in structural features and combinations of cooperative elements, as will now be fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine, partly in section; Fig. 2, a front elevation, the actuating-lever being removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation; Fig. 4, a transverse section taken on or about on line as a; of Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
In order not to encumber the machine with mechanism for applying an adhesive to the material that is used in uniting the vertical walls of a rectangular receptacle,I employ an adhesive that is neutral when cold-that is to say, that loses its property when in that state, but which will unite and firmly adhere to a body to which it maybe applied when heated. By the use of such an adhesive, of which there are many well-known kinds, I am enabled to coat the material previous to reeling it or as itis being reeled and then feed it to the work and apply heat to the parts to be united. In this manner the construction of the machine can be materially simplified.
The machine consists of a suitable frame, comprising a bed-plate P, to which is connected or cast a bearing-box C, an overhanging arm 6, and a vertical standard S. In the box 0 is formed arectangular opening having two of the angles in a vertical plane, in which opening or bearing is seated the form or carrier B of corresponding shape and in which bearing the said carrier is adjustable through the medium of a set-screw or bolt 0. The carrier 13 is hollow, closed at its front end and open at its rearend, and the said carrier projects from its bearing the required distance, and has in its two lower sides at its said front end openings 1) b for the escape of the products of combustion of any suitable combustible employed for heating the carrier. To this end a lamp maybe placed within the forward end of the carrier, or when gas is available a jet-pipe P Figs. 3, at, and 5, may be arranged within said forward end, or any other means may be provided for heating the carrier such as steam, hot air, &c.and the carrier constructed accordingly. I do not desire to limit myself to any particular or specific means for heating said carrier.
In the head of the standard e is formed a guideway E for the tool-stock or slide-block d, that carries a die or stamp D, that has a V-shaped longitudinal recess d in its under side. The stamp is of a length equal to or greater than that of the two parts, whether ends or sides, of a box or other receptacle to be united, and fits upon the carrier B with which it co-operates.
In order to provide means for uniting the walls of receptacles of various dimensions, the stamp is made detachable from, its stock or slide to which it is bolted, as shown, so that stamps to suit the length of the parts to be united may be secured to said stock or slide.
On each side of the groove d of the stamp D is pivoted a supporting and guide plate d having an arm (1, that acts as a Weight to hold said plate in contact with the inclined lateral face of the stamp D, the said plate serving as a guide and support for the material used in uniting the walls of a receptacle.
To the front wall of the bearing-box G, or to a plate 0' secured thereto, are screwed springarms I), in whose outer forked endis journaled a roller b bearing with a yielding pressure upon the two upper lateral sides of the carrier B.
The slide-plate (Z is connected by a forked and slotted link with a hand'lever l1, ful- ClllLlIOtl on the arm e, projecting from the overhanging arm e. The rear end of lever F has a stud on which is journaled a rollerf, that works in a slot h 71. formed in the arm ll of a two-armed lever II, that has its fulcrum on an arm 0 of the overhanging arm 0. The arm II of lever II has a segmental slot into which project two bosses or blocks formed on or secured to supporting-plates 7f, that are adjustable on the rear face of arm II by means of screws 7t, said bosses having a guide or clamping plate 76 secured to their front face by means of ascrew h, said plates 72. forming abutments for the connecting-rod i, and carrying the same along as the arm II vibrates. The throw of the connecting-rod may be varied within certain limits by adj usting the plates 71 toward or from each other. The other end of the connecting-rod L' is pivoted to a link 1", and said link is pivotally connected with the feed-carriage I.
The carriage I is mounted and slides f recly on a feed-table K, that is slotted longitudinally and carries at its rear end a guide-block h slottedverticallyand longitudinally. Through the longitudinal slot passes the continuous strip of material g, wound on a reel G, journaled in the upper forked end of the standard S on bed-plate P, a guide-roll It being journaled in the lower end of the forked portion of said standard. In the vertical slot of the block 7 is pivoted a dog or pawl 7a in such manner that the nose thereof will lie in a plane eccentric to and below its pivot-pin, so that as the carriage I moves forward the said strip y will pass freely through the slot of the guide-block under the dog m, but will be held by said dog against motion in a reverse direction. A similar dog is arranged at the front end of the feed-table K, that holds the material in position during the operation of the cutter. The carriage I has also a longitudinal slot for the passage of the ribbon of material g, and at its front end an inclined face i and a locking-dog that co-operates with the inclined face to lock the material 9 thereto during the forward movement of said carriage.
To the under side of the feed-carriage I is secured push-bar P, the nose p at the forward end of which extends through the slot in the feed-table 7;.
N is a longitudinal slotted bar adjustable in a bearing on the overhanging arm 0 by means of a set screw or bolt a. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 3.) The bar N has at its forward end a downward projection, the rear face of which is inclined, as shown at n in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig.
To the front end of the carriage I is hinged a knife i that is held clear of the ribbon of material 9 by means of a spring 2' Fig. 4c, and as the carriage I is moved forward the said knife comes in contact with the inclined face 71 of bar N and is depressed, thereby severing the ribbon or material g.
llaving described the construction of the machine embodying my invention, I will now briefly describe its operation. The following devices are adjusted to the length of the edges to be united: first, the holder, support, or carrier I to which heat is applied, as hereinabove set forth; second, the throw of the connecting-rod i, by adj usting the blocks h in the slot of the arm 11 of lever II, it being obvious that the farther the said blocks are moved from each other the shorter will be the stroke of the rod, which has its greatest stroke when both blocks are moved together to confine the rod between them; third, the slotted bar N, by means of set bolt or screw it, in conformity to the throw of the feed-carriage I, as determined by connecting-rod i, so that the cutter "17 will cut the material to proper lengths. These adjustments havin been effected, the endless strip or ribbon or material 5 coated with an adhesive of the nature referred to, is passed through the slots in gu ideblock 7.: and carriage I and down forward until its outer edge lies below the edge of the inclined face a of bar N. The lever F is now pulled down, thereby causing the carriage I to move the material g forward until the knife 2' contacts with the inclined face a on the bar N, by which said knife is caused to move downward and cut a strip off the endless ribbon. During this operation the stamp D remains practically stationary, the lever moving along the slots in the forked end of the connecting-link (P, that connects said lever with the slide clock or stock D. About the time the lever reaches the lower end of the slots in the link the lever II will have as sumed such a position that the slot 7L2 in the arm II thereof will be concentric to the leverfulcrum, said slot being a segment of a circle having the axis of the lever-fulcrum f for center. It will be seen that by further depressing the lever F the roller f will move in a circle concentric with the lever-fulcrum, so that the carriage I will remain stationary while the stamp D moves down onto the carrier B, where it is held until heated in order to promote the adhesion of the material to the parts to which it is to be applied. The lever F is now moved back to its normal position, and during the first portion of the movement namely, during the time the lever moves along the slots in the link-neither the stamp D nor the carrier I will be actuated; but when said lever F reaches the upper end of the slots in the link, the roller favill have entered the slotted portion 72 of lever-arm H so that during the remainder of the upward motion of the lover both the stamp and the carriage are simultaneously moved back into their normal position. During its backward motion the dogs on i k ride along the surface of the ribbon 9, thus leavingalength thereof on the feed-table K equal to the distance traveled by said carriage I. The machine is IIO now ready for continuous operation, asit will be observed that a strip of the proper length has been cut from the endless ribbon or material g and is lying 011 the feed-table K with its rear edge in front of the inclined face it of bar N, while the stamp D has been more or less heated. Two sides or ends of a box to be united are now placed on the carrier 13 with one of their edges along the apex of the upper angle of said carrier, 011 which they are firmly held by the springs Z2 through the medium of the roller b The lever is new again depressed, and before said lever moves the stamp D down the following operation takes place: The carriage I is caused to move forward, as described, and with it the push-bar P, that pushes the cut-off strip of material along the feed-table and the guide-plates (i into the slot (1' of the stamp D, said cut-off strip forming now the base of the triangular slot. As the knife 2' comes in contact with the inclined face 47. on bar N it is again depressed and a second strip of proper length cut off from the material As these operations are completed the stamp commences to move downward under the action of the lever F, the roller f again presses into part 7L2 of slot h 7L2, stopping all further motion of said carriage. Just before the stamp comes into contact with the carrier or the boards secured thereto and to be united, the arms (1 on the guide and supporting plates 61 contact with stops d projecting from the bearing-box C, tilting the plates out of the way of the strip of coated material, so that as the stamp completes its downward motion the said strip is folded over the edges of the boards B B and firmly pressed thereto, the heat softening the adhesive and causing it to adhere to or unite firmly With the boards B. The last-described operation may now be repeated until the piece of material is exhausted and the new reelful supplied, when the first-described operation is repeated.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a carrier on which the parts to be united are arranged with their meeting edges in close proximity to each other, said carrier being hollow and closed at its outer end and provided in two of its sides with apertures b, a plunger or stamp operating to fold an adhesive uniting-strip over and apply the same along the said meeting edges, and a heater, substantially such as described, for heating the carrier, for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the die D, having inclined lateral faces and a V-shaped groove (1' in its under side, and the guide and supporting plates (1 having arms 01, of the carrier B and the support for the carrier, provided with stops (Z for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, with the die D and carrier 13, of feeding devices consisting of the and the push-bar P, whose nose 13 projects through the slot of the table, for the purpose specified.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination, with the die-stock or slide, the die or stamp, the supporting and guide plates (Z the carrier for the parts to be united, and the feed-carriage I, of mechanism for reciprocating the die-stock or slide and the feedcarriage and for timing the operation of the stamp to that of the feeding device, consisting of the lever F, connected by slotted link with the die-stock, the lever H, the arm H of which has the angle-slot 71 h, in which one end of lever F operates, and the connectingrod i, connected with said lever II and the feed-carriage, as described.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination, with the die-stock or slide, the die or stamp, the supporting and guide plates (1 the carrier for the parts to be united, the feed-carriage I, and the cutter ticonnected therewith, of mechanism for reciprocating the die-stock and feed-carriage, for timing the operation of the die to that of the carriage, and for operating the cutter, consisting ofthe lever F, connected by slotted link with the die-stock, the lever I-I, whose arm H is provided with the angle-slot 71, h, in which one end of lever F operates, the connecting-rod 1', connected with said lever and feed-carriage, and an abutment in the path of the knife or cutter, for the purpose specified.
7. The combination,with the stamp or die D, the guide and supporting plates d and the carrier B, of the feeding devices consisting of the slotted feed-table K, carrying the slotted guide 79 and the pawls 7c and m, the slotted carriage I, adapted to reciprocate on the feed-table, and the push-bar P, secured to the underside of the carriage, with its nose p projecting through the slot of said carriage, for the purpose specified.
