UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIV OOD C. PHILLIPS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOOL-GRINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,515, dated May 5, 1891. Application filed December 24, 1890. Serial No. 375,660. (Model) T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELWooD C. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool Grinders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient knife-sharpening device, whereby the motion of the knife endwise will cause the rotation of a sharpening-wheel bearing against the blade. This object I attain by suspending the knife in a clamping device which moves with areciprocating rod having a cord attached thereto, whereby the sharpening-wheel is rotated.
My invention consists in the combination of the above-mentioned devices, and in certain details of construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the knife-sharpening devices embodying my invention, the knife being shown in full lines in position for sharpening one side of the edge and in dotted lines in position for sharpening the other side of the edge. Fig. 2 represents an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1, taken from the side of the clamp, the knife being removed. Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. 1, but ithout the knife-supports. Figs. 4 and 5 represent in detail the knifeholding devices. Fig. 6 represents a section of the emery-wheel with its shaft, and Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of the devices for operating the emery-wheel.
A designates an upright or standard provided below with a handle 6L2, and tapering above, as indicated at a. Arigid horizontal arm a, preferably cast with said standard, extends from its middle part and is provided with guide-lugs A for a horizontal rod 0, longer than said arm. A double-grooved pulley b is mounted freely on a small stud b on the front of said arm near said standard. A
'short spindle D, extending out from said standard below said arm and parallel thereto, has a spool D sleeved on 1t, carrying 011 it an emery-wheel E for sharpening knives and other tools. Two cords B and B extend from lugs c and c, raised on the ends of rod 0, and pass around pulley b in opposite directions, their inner ends being attached to and winding on the spool D. A knife II is suspended from said rod by a clamping device in position to have one side of its edge ground by said wheel. As said knife is moved endwise to the left, the rod 0 moves with it and the cord B unwinds from the spool D, rotating said spool and sharpening-wheel against the progressively advancing knife edge. \Vhen the knife is drawn back, the cord B does the rotating and sharpening. In either case the cord B or 13 not actively turning said spool is wound thereon. When one side of the edge is sufficiently sharpened, the knife and clamp may be reversed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to sharpen the other side of the edge.
I do not desire to confine myself to the particular form of knife-clamp shown, although it is very well adapted to its purpose and such as I prefer. From a link-bar 0, fast at one end on rod 0, a stud a near its other and lower end extends out laterally. On this stud I mount a pair of bars C, free for turning. Between the lower ends of said bars I pivot an upwardly-closingtongue F, the open position of which is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, and between the upper ends of said bars I pivot a downwardly-closing tongue f. These two reversely-closing tongues clamp the knifeblade against the bars 0, a screw 0 being employed to bind the said parts together. A long shoulder c on the lower end of the bar 0' prevents the knifeblade from turning backward too far.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An endwise-movable support for aknife or other tool, in combination with a rotatory sharpening-wheel geared to said support in order that the endwise motion of the knife may-cause such rotation.
2. The standard A and arm a, in combination with rod 0, movable endwise in guides on said arm, the cords B and B, attached to the opposite ends of said bar, the spool D, on which said cords wind in opposite directions,
the sharpening-whecl E, carried by said spool, and a knife-clamp attached to and moving with said rod, substantially as set forth.
3. The knife-clamp consisting of bars 0, 5 reversely-folding tongues F f, and screws a",
substantially as set forth.
d. The link-bar C, provided with shoulder 0" to prevent the knife-blade from turning backward too far, a lateral stud c, and a IO knife-clamp suspended from said stud and capable of being reversed, as shown.
5. An 0l1d\\'iSGl1lOVtl)iO knifesupport providcd with rmersely-acting cords,in combination with a sharpening-wheel rotated by said cord, a double-grooved pulley guiding said cord, and a supporting-standard for said devices, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
