SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,265, dated April 28, 1891. Application filed October 24,1890. Serial No. 369,160. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Y. BUCKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Edging Sheet-Metal Plates, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an edging-machine for jointing or uniting the adjacent ends of two or more plates of sheet metal, so as to form a continuous sheet of the same, constructed as hereinafter described.
Figure l represents a plan View, partly broken away, of an edging-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents avertical sectional view on line moc, Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4L represent, respectively, side views of the ends of two connected plates before and after pressing the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a frame or support, in the side Walls of which are journaled the rotary shafts B and C.
D and E designate a former or folder and clamp, respectively, operating in the inclined guide or way F, which is secured to the frame. The upper end of the clamp E is formed with a level surface, so as to be adapted to contact With a plate of sheet metal and hold the same rrnlyagainst the under side of a bed-plate G while the front edge of the sheet-metal plate is being bent over the edge and on the face of the said bed-plate G by its contact with the upper end of the former D. The lower ends of the former D and clamp E are connected with the toggle-levers J and K, respectively, and the said levers also are pivoted to the frame A and connected to other toggle-levers L and M, also pivoted to the frame.
to bend one end of a second plate, so that said end is adapted to engage with the end of the first plate bent by the former D. The former Q is provided with an angular upper end adapted to bear against the plateand press the same against a bed-plate S, fastened to the frame, said bed-plate having a recessed portion S', in Which the bent end of the sheetmetal plate is formed.
The parts Q and R are adapted to move freely upon each otherin guides T, which are secured to the frame A, similar to the guide F, and have their lower ends connected to the toggle-levers U and V, respectively, which are pivoted to the frame and connected With other toggle-levers W and X, also pivoted to the frame. On the shaft O are the camsYand Z for operating the said levers W-and X, and thereby the levers U and V and the former Q, and clamp R.
The shafts B and C are provided With bevel gear-wheels A', meshing with the bevel gearwheels B', loose on the secondary drivingshafts C' and D', and provided With pinionhubs E', meshing with the mutilated Wheels F' on a main driving-shaft G', the latter heilig parallel with the secondary shafts.
H and J' designate feed-rollers suitably i supported on opposite sides of the edging device for carrying the plates of metal Which are to be united to the-proper positions for bending the ends thereof.
To operate the secondary shafts C' and D', either together or separately, the followingdescribed mechanism is employed: On the main shaft G' are the gear-wheels K', meshingwith the gear-wheels L' L', loosely mounted on the said secondary shafts.
M' and N' designate counter-shafts having suitable bearings and operated by bevelwheels P' Q' thereon, which mesh with the bevel-wheels R' S', secured to the main shaft. Ontheshafts M' N' are thecam-grooved Wheels or drums T' U'., respectively, in the camgrooves of which are inserted the ends of the pivoted levers V' W', so that the said levers are moved by the rotation of' said drums. The other ends of the said levers are connected to the clutches X Y', which are so secured to the shafts C' D' that when connected IOO to the loose wheels L L' the rotation of the main shaft will rotate the said secondary Shafts. The grooved ways in the drums T' U' are so formed that the clutch X' of the shaft C' is connected with its wheel L' a little in advance of the connection of the clutch Y with its loose wheel L', so that the sheetmetal plate which has received the bend in its front end can be advanced in time to engage the plate that has received a bend on its rear end.
The operat-ion of the device is as follows: The main shaft G being set in motion, the feed-rollers H J' are operated by means of the secondary shafts and connecting mechanism, so that a plate ot' sheet metal fed to the roller Il' is advanced until its front end is in the proper position or projecting a little beyond the edge of the bedplate G, when, owing to the construction of the parts,
the clutch mechanisms are simultaneously released and the shafts C' and D' thereby stopped. The shafts B and C are then put in motion by means of the toothed portions of the mutilated wheels F' coming in contact with the pinions of the bevel-wheels B' B', so that the bevel-wheels A' A', with their shafts B and C, are operated, therebyv rotating the cams N and P, so that the togglelevers L M and J K are operated. The cam P, being in advance, raises its connecting-levers, so that the clamp E is iirst raised, binding the plate of metal against the bed G, where it is firmly held for the action of the upper end of the former D against the projecting edge, which latter is bent upward and against the face H of the bed-plate. The further rotation of the shaft B and its cams permits the lowering of the clamp and former, so that the plate of metal is released from the same. The clutch mechanism of the shaft C' now connects the same with the main shaft, so that the said shaft C' is rotated, whereby the feed-roller H' advances the sheet until its front or bent end is beyond the form erQ and clamp R and between the rollers J', when, owing to the timing of the clutch mechanism of the shaft D', the latter shaft begins its rotation, so as to operate the rollers J'. W'hen the sheet of metal has been carried by the rollers J' until its rear edge has not quite reached theformerQ, and a second sheet which has been fed to the rollers H' has its front end in the position for making the front bend, already described, the shafts C' and D'are simultaneously stopped by the disengagementof the clutches, and the shafts B Care then rotated so that the bends on the rear end of the advanced plate and on the front end of the second plate are made, the bend on the rear end being made by the former Q pressing the edge of the advanced plate into the recessed portion of the bed-plate S. The shaft C' is then rotated so that the rear plate is advanced, being guided 011 the curved guide Z' 'Having thus described my invention, what l I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
