G. REIN.
ROLL PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
No. 450,918. Patented Apr. 21, 1891.
I gwiaa'w 2226M I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVI S REIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN ROLL PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,918, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed December 9, 1889' Serial No. 333,122. (No model.)
To (0Z5 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS REIN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Gutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved holder and cutter for wrapping-paper and the like; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is afront elevation of my improved holder and cutter. Fig. II is a side view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a suitable base, to which end standards or pieces 2 are secured. These end pieces or standards are each formed with a slot 2.
3 represents the roll of paper mounted 011 an arbor, as usual, and supported by the standards, so as to revolve or turn as the paper is removed.
4 represents the upwardly-extending knife, secured to the standards 2 by means of arms 5, which have a pivotal connection with the standards, as shown at 6. The heel 4* of the knife bears against the roll of paper, as shown, and as the size of the roll decreases the knife gravitates toward the center, bearing always against the roll.
7 represents a rod extending from one standard to the other, journaled in the slots so as to rest on the roll of paper, and over this rod the paper passes from the front of the roll and then passes downwardly around beneath the roll up under the knife.
hen a piece of paper is wanted, the end S of the paper is drawn out until the required amount is unreeled, and then bya downward draw of the paper against the knife the cutting is accomplished.
By having the last round of paper pass over the rod 7 and beneath the roll of paper before being passed over the knife I accomplish two results: first, a tension device which prevents the too rapid or too free movement of the roll of paper, and, second, I obtain the necessary resistance to prevent the cutting of the paper turning the roll of paper. Moreover, a machine thus constructed is very cheap and durable and is not liable to get out of order.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the supports 2, having slots 2, the roll journaled to said supports, a tension-rod 7, journaled in the slots and supported 011 the roll, the arms 5, hinged to the supports over the roll, and the knife secured to the lower ends of the arms and resting on the roll, substantially as described.
' GUSTAVUS REIN.
