ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD 0. SMITH, OF OSKAIIOOSA, IOIVA.
COMBINED INDICATOR AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,897, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed June 16, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. SMITH, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Indicator and Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to a combined indicator and advertising device especially adapted for barber-shops; and it has for its object to provide such a device which will be attractive in appearance, cheap as to cost, and effective for its desired purpose.
To this end my invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts, all of which will hereinafter be fully described in the annexed specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof on the line 3 3,
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates a boarder frame of any suitable ornamental shape, the lower portion A of which is centrally divided by a mirror B, upon each side of which are arranged a series of advertisingspaces 0 O, as shown. Upon the front face of the base to, immediately below the mirror B, is arranged a broom-holder D, provided upon its front face with a match-receptacle E.
Upon the rear face of the upper portion A of the board A, I journal two disks or wheels F and G, each provided with a series of numbers from O to 9, arranged in a circle near their peripheral edges.
Upon the rear face of the wheel F is formed a series of inclined teeth or ratchets f, one for each number on the face of said wheel, with which engages one end h of a springactuated pivoted lever H, the outer end of which is connected to a cord I, which hangs down to one edge of the board, as shown in Fig. 1.
The wheel F, which is in the nature of a units-Wheel, is provided with a projecting finger f, which at each complete revolution of said wheel engages with one of a series of projections or ratchets on the back of the Serial No. 355,678. (No model.)
wheel G and serves to move the same from one number to the next succeeding number. J indicates a stop-pawl which holds the wheel F from reverse movement.
By referenoe to Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be seen that at the point where the two wheels meet I provide the part A with a sight-opening a through which the aligning numbers on the wheels F and G can be seen. Thus should the number in sight be 13, which indicates that the person holding check N0. 13, is next, and the operator pulls upon the cord J, the wheel F will be turned until thefigure 4; comes in sight, and so on. Should the number in sight be 19, the next pull on the cord will bring the cipher on wheel F 1n place, and the movement of the said wheel being transmitted to the wheel Gby the progection f will bring the number 2 of the Wheel G in place. Upon the upper end of the board A is arranged a gong L, connected to the lever II by the cord m, so that when the operator pulls the cord to indicate the number for the next in turn the gong will be rung. Intermediate the sight-opening a and the gong is arranged a clock N.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the advantages of my improvement will readily appear. The same may be placed against the wall or upon any convenient bracket or stand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
'1. In an indicator substantially as described, the combination of the board or support having a sight-opening, the numbered wheels journaled in the rear of such board and arranged to revolve toward each other and to expose their numbers through such opening, one of such wheels being adapted at each revolution to advance the other wheel one step, the first said wheel being provided with teeth, a spring-actuated lever arranged to engage said teeth, and a cord connected with said lever, whereby to operate the same, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The improved indicator herein described and shown, comprising a board or support having a sight-opening, the numbered wheels journaled on the back of the support, one to ICO each side of said openingand arranged to revolve in reverse directions, whereby their nu mbers will come in line with said sight-opening, the hand-cord, and intermediate mechanism between said hand-cord and the numbered wheels, whereby the operator can by pulling the cord advance said wheels at will, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The improved indicator herein described, consisting of the board having near its upper end a sight-opening and near its lower end a broom-holder and having its intermediate portion between said broom-holder and aperture provided centrally with a mirror and 011 opposite sides thereof with advertisingspaces, the numbered wheels supported in rear of such board and arranged to expose their figures through the sight-opening, one of such wheels being provided with teeth and being adapted at each revolution to advance the other wheel one step, a spring-actuated lever arranged to engage the toothed Wheel, an annunciator or gong, and connections be tween the said lever and gong, all arranged and adapted for use substantially as set forth.
