Description
G.GURTLER.
ADJUSTABLE CANDLE HOLDER.
No. 450,884. Patented Apr. 21, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV GIIRTLER, OF OFFENBAOII-ON-TIlE-MAIN, GERMANY.
ADJUSTABLE CANDLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,884, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed Aprillfi, 1890. Serial No. 348,274. (No model.) Patented in $witzerland February 28, 1890, No. 1,9 in England March 4, 1890, No. 3,388; in Belgium Max:114, 1890,1l0. 89,709: in France March 12, 1890, No. 204,319; in Denmark May 28, 1890, and in Austria-Hungary June 22. 1890, No. 10,342 and No. 25,749.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, GUSTAV GI'JRTLER, 0f Offenbach on-the-Main, in the Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Candle- I'Iolder, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Thisinvention relates to an adjustable candle-holder.
In candle-holders and candlesticks of ordinary construction the socket in which the end of the candle is placed is normally of fixed diameter and will consequently fit only one size of candle accurately. Vhen larger or smaller candles are used, the ends of the candles have either to be pared or scraped down to the size of the socket if too large or to be packed in the socket with a coil of paper or other packing if too small.
The object of this invention is to avoid these annoyances and inconveniences by enabling the candle-holder to fit securely and firmly upon the end of any ordinary candle without scraping or packing.
I will proceed to describe this invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents an elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical section, Fig. 3 an inverted plan, and Fig. 4 a plan, of a candle-holder constructed in accordance with these improvements.
The improved candle-holder consists of a base-plate Z), upon the circumference of which there are formed or secured, preferably, four vertical projecting parts 0. The base-plate has formed in it a similar number-four, for example-of pairs of parallel slotsff, which serve as guides for the movable sections or candle'clamps d d. Attached to each of the movable sections d there is a semi-tubular part 6, the opposite outer ends of which are capable of passing through a horseshoe or similarly-shaped slot in each of the end plates or projecting parts 0. The outer end of each semi-tube'g is bent downward, so as to overlap the tongue formed in the end plate by the curved slot, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and I. The lower part of the candle clamps d are provided with projections which pass through the slots, and thus form the guides v 2', which are returned under the base-plate to prevent vertical motion of the clamps Inside each of the semi-tubes there is arranged a spiral spring 71, which at one end abuts against the lower part of the clamp and at the other end against the tongue left by the curved slot in the end plate. The candle-clamps have a slight outward inclination toward the top, so as to facilitate the insertion of the ends of the candles. On the underside of the base-plate there may be fixed the inverted frustuni of a cone a or an equivalent part, by means of which the device maybe inserted into an ordinary candlestick, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, or be fixed upon any ordinary candle holder or bracket.
Figs. 2 and 4 Show in what manner the holder may be used with candles of different diameters. To the right of each of these figures a section of the hold r is represented as being withdrawn from the center. All the sections are similarly withdrawn for the insertion of a thick candle, when the elasticity of the springs h it forces the segments back toward the center and upon the end of the candle, which is thereby firmly held. When a thin candle is used, its insertion into the slightly-conical socket will eitect the separation of the sections to the required extent.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is
In an adjustable candle-holder, the combination, with a base-plate I), having a series of parallel slots f, of the candleclamps (Z d, the half-tubes e on the same, provided with guides 11 11, mounted to slide in the slots ff, the flanges g on the ends of the half-tubes, the projecting parts 0 on the base, through which the half-tubes can slide, and the spring h, contained in the half-tubes and serving to press the candle-clamps toward each other, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV GUR-TLER. IVitnesses:
PHILIPP FREUR, FRIEDR. TREUSCH, J 1'.
