MECHANISM FOR OPERATING STEAM-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,526, dated April 14-, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN H. PITKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Operating Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable otl1- ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in mechanism for operating steam-engines, the object being to provide novel means for controlling any kind of reverse gear operated by steam, air,or hydraulic cylinder, together with the throttle-valve.
With this end in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a view in elevation showing a portion of a steam-engine with the improved mechanism for operating the throttle-valve and reverse mechanism applied.
A represents a lever fulcrumed at 1 in proximity to the steam-cylinder and terminating at its upper end in a handle, by which the lever is manipulated, and at its lower end the lever is pivotally connected to a rod 2, conveniently at or near the center of the latter. This rod is connected at its rear end to a cam-lever I, which operates the balanced throttle-valve 3, which admits steam to the cylinder. This cam-lever I is provided with a groove 6, being radial through a greater portion of the distance through which it is moved and having a different radius through the remaining portion of its length, so that the, valve is only operated by the lever through a comparatively small portion of its throw. At the opposite end the rod 2 is con nected to a bell-crank lever 7, which latter connects with the valve operating the reverse steam-cylinder II. This valve-rod in turn is connected to one end of a rocking lever 10, and the opposite end of the latter is connected with the usual reversing-link F.
A represents the brake-lever, the short arm of which is connected by a rod 11 to the lever 12, which operates the brake.
In operation the engineer oi other attendant throws lever A a distance, say, of three or four inches, to point D, which shifts the valve of cylinder. H, immediately throwing the link F to its extreme position. Meanwhile the groove of cam I being radial for the distance through which it is moved, the throttle-valve has not yet been opened; but the outer part of the groove of cam I being of a different radius, as the operator pulls the lever A from point D to E, the throttle is brought to any desired opening. A reverse motion throws the lever back to point D, at which point the throttle is again closed, and to point B, upon which the link is thrown to itsopposite point, reversing the motion of the engine, and on further motion from B to O the throttle is again opened for running engines 7a in that direction to any desired speed.
A double wedge may be used in place of the cam for operating the throttle or any other device to accomplish the same motion,
and various modifications on the other parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with suitable reversemechanism operated by steam, air, or hydraulic cylinder, a throttle-valve, and a cam 8; mechanism connected with the valve, of a single lever for operating the cam-lever and reverse mechanism, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a reverse mechanism operated by steam and a throttle-valve, on of a cam-lever connected with the throttlevalve and having a groove of diiferent radii, reversing-link, reverse steam-cylinder, means for connecting said parts, and operating-lever connected with the cam-lever and the reversing cylinder and link, substantially as set forth.
