Description

(NoMoael.) H FOGATY STEAM TRAP- Patented Apr. 14,1 1891.
UNITED STATES JAMES Il. FOGARTY,
PATENT EEICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STEAM-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,453, dated April 14, 1891. Application iiled November 26, 1890. Serial No. 372,669. (No model.) I
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES II. FOGARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Traps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates specially to the improvement of steam-traps or equivalent constructions used for the separation and discharge of water o'f condensation from any steam-using system or plant.
My improvements consist in the special construction, arrangement, and combination f the several parts or portions operating to control the movement of the discharge-valve, and also in the arrangement of a pocket or receptacle within the main operating-lever in such manner and for the purpose that an eX- treme proportion of leverage is provided to effect a speedy closing of the discharge-valve.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l, 2, and 3 are sectional views representing an apparatus embodyingv my improvements. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are enlarged detail views of the main operating-lever and the upper portion of the connecting valve-stem.
The letter A designates the water-holding chamber of the apparatus. It is shown provided with an inlet-nozzle at a, an outlet-noz zle at b, and lugs for a water-gage at c and c2.
B designates the operating-float.
C designates the discharge-valve, through which all surplus water passes out.
D designates a connection between the float B and the main operating-lever E.
F designates a stem connecting the discharge-valve C with the main operating-lever E.
G designates a bracket for the support of operating-lever E.
II designates an inverted valve-seat, upon which the valve C acts to close the discharge. This valve-seat II is preferably attached immediately to and removable with the bracket G to permit of the taking out of the whole internal operating and discharging apparatus for examination and repair.
At K is shown the usual water-level.
The float B may be constructed of any of the usual metals or methods, and is here shown connected to the main operating-lever E by means of a jaw CZ and pin CZ. The main op- -erating-lever, in order to bring the center of valve-stem F as close to the fulcrum e of the operz'iting-lever as possible and thus make the short arm of the lever of minimum length, is provided with a pocket or pockets at e2 e2, within which the suspension arms or pins ff of the valve-stem F rest and operate. By such construction an extra powerful effect is provided for whenthe contained water of 'the trap-chamber ceases to support the fioatB at regulation level. With the dropping of suoli water-level the float follows it down, forcing the long arm of the main operating-lever E to move in a downward direction and the short arm of said lever to move in an upward direction, bringing stem and valve with it, and closing the discharge against the head of the contained water. lVith the rising of the water-level the float moves up, and, releasing its control and support of the valve, the weight or head of water at once acts and opens the valve for a discharge. Thus a carefully balanced control and operation of the dischargevalve is provided for and an even and steady discharge of water of condensation is effected. To provide against a chance sticking of the discharge-valve E to its seat, cams e e are attached to the main operating-lever E to act, in connection with a pair of lugs or shoulders f f', attached to valve-stern F, and force, by the effect of the eXtra high rising of the water and oat and the consequent pressure of such cams c c against the shoulders f f the discharge-valve away from its seat. The 1 cams e c can only come into working-contact with the lugs or shoulders f f when the water-level is extremely high.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` 1. In a steam-trap or equivalent construction for the separation and discharge of water of condensation from a steam-using plant or system, the combination of a oat, a dischargevalve, a connecting-lever provided with eccentric pocket or pockets e2 c2, and a supporting-bracket upon which said lever rests, substantially as and for purposes set forth.
2. In a steam-trap or equivalent device, the combination of a oat, a downwardly-operating valve, a connecting-lever provided with IOO eccentric pocket or pockets e2 e2, a supporting-bracket upon which said lever rests, and an inverted valve-seat II attached thereto, substantially as and for purposes set forth.
In combination With the float and discharge-valve of a steam-trap or equivalent device,- a main operating-lever E, provided with eccentric pocket or pockets e2 e2, and a valvestem F, provided with suspension arms or pins ff, substantially as and for purposes set forth.
4. In combination with the float and discharge-valve of a steam-trap or equivalent device, a main operating-lever provided With eccentric pocket or pockets e2 e2, and `cams e e", and a valve-stem F, provided with suspension arms or pins f f, and lugs or shoulders j" f', substantially as and for purposes set forth.
5. In a steam-trap or equivalent device, a main operating-lever provided with cams e e', a valve-stem F, provided with lugs or shoulders f f inverted valve-seatILvalve C, and supporting-bracket G, substantially as and for purposes set forth.
JAMES II. FOGARTY.
