VAPO Rl-Z ER FOR GAS ENGlNES.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 450,091, dated April 7, 1891.
Application filed $eptember 26, 1890- Serial No. 366,274. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONIDAS G. \VOOL- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaporizers for Gas-Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to a vaporizer for gasengines. .The object of my invention is to provide a simple apparatus for vaporizing gasoline or other volatile liquids for use as an explosive agentin gas-engines; anditconsists in the combination, with a gas-engine, of a va porizer of novel construction, substantially as hereinafterfully described and as set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawii'igs, wherein A represents the cylinder, and B the compressed-air tank, of an ordinary gas-engine. Between the cylinder and the air-tank is arranged the vaporizer D, which is filled with sponge or other suitable porous absorbent material H, and connected to the cylinder and tank, respectively, by suit-able vertical pipes K K, the latter having the throttlevalve G- for admitting air from the tank..
Mounted above the vaporizer D is a full reservoir 0, having a plug Ill for feeding the same and communicating with the vaporizer by a suitable coupling provided with a needle-valve E and a sight-feed F. At the upper end of the pipe K is a. chamber N, which hasa plug 0, and is also filled with sponge or other suitable material H, and which chamber has a perforated diaphragm Q over the port B into the valve leading to the cylinder A, which valve has a rod P connected to it and by which it is operated from the moving parts of the engine, and at the bottom of the port R is a drip-cup 1. An air-pipe L connects the top of rod K and reservoir 0 to equalize the pressure above and below in C.
I is a drip-cup or vessel below K to receive any unvaporized liquid that maypass through the vaporizer D.
J and J are glass gages to show the state of the contents of the vessels 0 and J,
Compressed air from the chamber 13 being admitted to the vaporizer D through the valve G, takes up the vapor from the liquid in the sponge, forming an explosive compound which passes through the vertical pipe K and cylinder A, and is then fired, any excess of liquid overflowing into the drip vessels I and I. The vaporizer is arranged below the comnected thereto by a vertical pipe, whereby danger of a flow ofthe liquid into the chamber by gravity is obviated.
\Vhat I claim isl. The combination, with a gas or vapor engine, of a vaporizer consisting of an insuitable porous material and connected, respectively, with the compressed-air chamber and the cylinder of the engine, a drip-cup between the vaporiZing-chamber and the cylinder of the engine, and a fuel-reservoir mounted above, supported on, and connected with the vaporizing-chamber, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a vapor or gas chamber filled with sponge or other suitable porous material and connected, respectively, with the air-chamber and the cylinder of the engine, a drip-cup between the vaporizingchamber and the cylinder of the engine, a
chamber, and an air-pipe L, connecting the pipe K with the fuel-reservoir, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with a gas or vapor engine, of a vaporizer consisting of an inclosed chamberD, filled with sponge or other suitable material and connected, respectively, with the compressed-air chamber and the cylinder of the engine, a second chamber N, filled with sponge or other suitable material between said chamber D and the cylinder connections between chambers N and D and said cylinder, a dripecup between said cham bers N and D, and a fuel-reservoir connected to the chamber D, substantially as set forth.
4. A vaporizer for vaporizing volatile liquids, composed of a vaporizing-chamber D,
filled with sponge or other suitable material,
bustion-chamber of the cylinder and conclosed chamber filled with sponge or other.
engine, of a vaporizer consisting of an inclosed fuel-reservoir connected with the vaporizing its connections into the upper'end of the 2t fuel-reservoir '1, mounted on the chamber D and communicating therewith, a supplementary vaporizing-chamber N, also filled with sponge orother suitable material, a dripcup connected to the chamber N, and a dripcup I between chambers D and N, connections between said chambers and the airchamber and the cylinder of the engine, a fuel-reservoir O, mounted on the vaporizing- 1o chamber D, connected thereto, and an airpipe L, connecting the pipe K with said fuelreservoir for equalizing the pressure in said reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in x 5 presence of two witnesses.
