' F. P. MIGHELL.
CLOTHES POUNDER. No. 449,555.
Patented Mar. 31., 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN P. MIGHELL, OF SUGAR GROVE, ILLINOIS.
CLOTHES-POUNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,555, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed December 18, 1890- Serial No. 375,127- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN P. MIGHELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sugar Grove, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes- Iounders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clothes-pounders; and it consists in the construction and combination of the part-s,as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure I is a ver tical sectional view of a clothes-pounderconstructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is abottom View.
A refers to a truncated cone, which is provided at a suitable distance above its base with a transverse partition a, from which depend a series of vertical partition-plates b, which are also secured to the sides of the cone. Through the center of the cone A extends a tube B, which at a suitable distance below its upper end is provided with perforations c, said perfo rationsbein g located above the upper end of the cone.
0 refers to a cap or cylinder having a suitable coverand means forconnecting the same to the upper end of the tube B. The lower edge of this cap is provided with openings (Z.
The handle or stick by which the clothespounder is operated is forced into the upper end of the tube B, but not to the extent to extend below the perforations or or a large portionof that confined will pass up the tube B through the perforationsc and out of the openings cZ, carrying with itat the same time a certain amount of water, which will be agitated to rapidly form suds. The inolosed air-chamber E will give buoyancy to the pou nder.
Having thus described my invention, I clain In a clothes-pounder, the combination of an outer frustum-shaped shell A, having secured to its upper end a tube B, with perforations 0, vertical walls I), secured to the lower portion of the shell, to the central tube, and to a transverse wall or within the shell, so as to.
form a dead-air space E, a cap secured to the shell A and provided adjacent to said shell with perforations d, a cover for the cap 0, secured to said cap and to the upperend of the tube B, substantially as shown, whereby an air-passage is provided through the tube 13 and cap 0 for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN P. MIGIIELL.
