IMPROVEMENT 1N FIFtE-ESCAPES.

Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 44,934, dated November 8,1864.

T o all whom yit mag/'concern Beit known that I, RICHARD CHANDLER, of the city of- New York, and State of New York, have invented. new and useful Improve ments in Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of referlows:

l To any ordinary Window-traine of a house (at the alarm of tire) l suspend a cross-bar or rod, A, across the outside of vthe sill of the window or center of the window-frame, by resting the ends of the bar A horizontally 1n hooks B, which hooks are attached to each side of the window-trame by spikes or bolts At the center of a long rope, E, I bend the rope together, and over it pass a strong iron ring, C, forming a bight or loop, D..

Through this loop the one .end ofthe rod Ais .thrust until the loop D reaches and rests about the center of the rod A. The ends ot' the rope E extend to the ground, and the tirenlen seize each end, separating them 011 each side to such a distance that the ring C 1e-k mains at; the top of the angle ot. the rope E,

arngthe ring U firmly near the cross-bar A and preventing the ring C from sliding down the rope E.

To the ring C, l have a strong belt, F, of

' leather or other 1naterial,permanently attached at one end, which I pass around the person or goods to be lowered, and safely fasten the person by securing the other end of .the belt; F to a hook, H, which is also securely attached to the ring C. As soon as the person or goods are thus safely belted and secured bythe belt F to the ring the remen approach each other, gradually bringing the ends of the rope E together, narrowing the angle t'ormed by the rope, so that: the ring C gradually descends with its load until the load,-

is sai'el y landed upon v,th e ground, The belt Fl is then unloosed and unloaded,and the remen again move outward from each other, widening the ends of the rope E, and then the ring C with its belt F is moved rapidly up againto the top, near the bar A, ready to receive another person or load.

The advantages of my invention consist in its simplicity, cheapness, and rapid operation as a re-escape that can be kept without inconvenience in any upper room of any house or building.

What; I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-

The arrangement and combination ot' the devices A, C, E, F, and H, when arranged, combined land operated .as herein described. and for the purposes set forth.
