W Z. W Z M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVOLF GARRE'ISON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR TRIMMING AND BRANDING CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,260, dated March 31, 1891.
' Application filed November 3, 1890. Serial No. 370,179. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, W'OLF GARRETSON, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Trimming and Branding Cigars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a machine for trimming and branding cigars at one operation; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front end elevation, portions of the casing being broken away to show the internal construction. Fig. 3 is a side elevation in section on line a: at, Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is an elevation in transverse section on line 3] y, Fig. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the branding mechanism detached.
A represents a metal casing provided with doors A A located, respectively, at the rear end and rear sides, substantially as shown, for the purposes hereinafter mentioned. The top wall of the container has a longitudinal groove a, in which a cigar 0 may be laid for trimming and branding, the top wall of the casing at the bottom of this groove being provided with an opening A of considerable size where the brand is to be applied to the cigar. A stop a operates in the groove and is adjustable lengthwise thereof for gaging the length of the cigar being trimmed.
B is a hand-lever mounted on shaft B, the latter extending, as shown, lengthwise the casing and being journaled in suitableboxes connected with the casing. To the inner face of this lever is attached a knife B for trimming-that is to say, for cutting off the larger end of the cigar to reduce the cigars to uniform length. Shaft B is provided with a spring B the spring being coiled around the shaft, the one end of the spring being secured to the shaft and the other end of the spring bearing upon the casing, the action of the spring serving to elevate or reverse the knife, lever, and connected mechanism.
0 is a rock-shaft extending parallel with shaft B, shaft 0 having attached a rockarm O. This rock-arm terminates in a long head C this head having a recess in which to set the brand or type c, the latter being usually held in place by gravity, aided, perhaps, by a snug fit. Lever B is toothed at b, this toothed section constituting a segmental gear that engages a corresponding fractional gear 0, mounted on shaft 0, by which engagement in actuating the handlever rock-arm O is actuated, but in the reverse direction. The cigarsone at a timeare placed in the groove and are held down by the fingers, the latter being placed about over opening A or where the brand is to be applied. By drawing the handle ver forward and downward the end of the cigar is cutoff and at the same timethe brand is applied to the under side of the cigar. Now, as the trimming has to be done it is evident that the branding by'rneans of my improved mechanism can be done without any extra cost. To brand a cigar successfully the brand must be heated, and to this end I provide a burner E or 6, according to circumstances, the burner being located directly under the head that holds the brand. Burner E is for gas, and suitable attachments are provided for connecting a gaspipe; but'where gas is not obtainable I use a lampsuch, for instance, as shown at G- to which lamp is attached the burner e. By opening the door at the rear end the lamp may be inserted or removed, and by opening the other door access is had to the burner for lighting, &c.
"Vhat I claim is The combination, with a hand-lever mounted on a shaft and bearing a knife adapted to trim cigars, of a rock-arm and shaft, the former bearinga brand, the knife mechanism and the branding mechanism being intergeared or operatively connected, so that in operating the knife the brand is thereby operated in the reverse direction, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of October, 1890.
WOLF GARRETSON. Witnesses:
C. H. DORER, WARD HOOVER.
