SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,102, dated April 8, 1890.

To all whom it may cmwern:
Be it kn'own that I, MORRIS KOHN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Foot-Pieces for Cloth-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to the construction of the foot-piece attached to the cutting` heads of cloth-cutting machines, and whose function it is to pass under the pile of cloth and lift it from the table. As heretofore constructed, these foot-pieces have usually been made in one solid piece having no movement upon their supports; but in the application, Serial No. 308,590, filed by 'me on the 25th day of April, ISSQ, I show a lifting-foot provided with a forked device having its limbs located at either side of the disk-knife and extending forward of the cutting-edge, with Ineans for lifting theforward end of the fork device, so that the goods maybe thereby raised and the cutmade uniform throughout the entire height of the pile'. The lifting device shown in said application performed its work very well; but it is nevertheless open to some objections. Being narrow, it applied lifting power to the goods only along a narrow line, and when working near the edge of the pile it allowed the goods to slip laterally out of the way of the knife. As shown, the foot is made in two parts, the front part C having a rearward eX- tension c and a slot c', which gives room to the knife. At (l the front part is hinged, so that it maybe lifted to the position shown by the broken lines by appropriate meanssuch, for instance, as the jointed levers F f and the thumb-lever G, which latter is located in close proximity to the handle by which the operator guides the cutting, the lower lever F being joined to the bent end. g of the extension c. It will now be seen that if the lever G is depressed the movable part of the foot will be raised to the position shown by the broken lines, or to any intermediate position, the intention being to give the movable part C such a range of movement as will insure the lifting of the lower layer of goods to the point where it will be cut by the most advanced part of the knife. Aspring H encircles the part f, and is employed to return the operating-levers to their normal position.
The construction shown provides a Inovable lifting device operable at will, having the slot which surrounds the knife closed at both ends, so that the sides of the lifter cannot spring or get out of position or get against the edge of the knife. This latter objection was present in the forked lifter shown in my previous application.
I claim- 1. The combination, with the cutter and cutter-head of a cloth-cutting machine, of a foot adapted to pass under the cloth and made in two parts-a forward hinged part C and a rear stationary part D-supports for said foot, and means for raising the forward part C to lift the goods, substantially as speci- Iied.
2. The combination,with a disk-cutter of a cloth-cutting` machine, of a foot consisting of :L hinged part C and :L support therefor, said part C being' hinged to the support back of the cutter, and means for raising said part C, substantially as set forth.
3.
