W.-\l.LAClC ll. CURTIS, OF POMEROY, OHIO.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,830, dated March 24, 1891.
Application filed December 31 l 1890. Serial No. 376,374:- (No model.) I
To (6 whom it may (9011 err/L.-
Be it known that I, \VALLAOE l3. CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at P0 meroy, in the county of llleigs and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovenients in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents aperspective view of my improved bale-tie, showing the ends of the binding-wire connected thereto; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the tie, showing it bent to facilitate the insertion of the free end of the wire in the slots, after which it is flattened out; Fig. 3, adetail view of the tie; Fig. l, a sectional view of the tie after it has been flattened to lock the end of the wire thereto.
The present invention has for its object to provide a bale-tie that will be simple in construction, and that can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost and placed upon the market within reach of all requiring such a device for ba-ling hay, straw. cotton, and for all purposes to which an article of this character would be found useful; and the invention consists in a tie constructed substandaily as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, ii represents the tie constructed in accordance with my invention, and B O the two ends of the binding-wire that is ordinarily employed in this class of bale-ties. The tie is formed of a sheet-metal plate, preferably rectangular in shape, and has two slots 0. Z) extending longitudinally of said plate and on line with each other, as shown. This plate has also a hole 0 at one end for attaching one end of the wire, the end as shown at B being passed through the hole and twisted upon itself or connected thereto in any other well-known manner. The slots a Z) are tapering at their ends to form a wedge for the end B of the wire which is inserted from the upper side of the plate through the slot a. and from the under side of the plate through slot Z), as shown. The tapering ends (I of the slots which wedge the wire against the sides thereof securely hold it from slipping, the wire binding against these sides or sharp edges when the plate is straightened.
To facilitate the insertion of the end of the wire through both of the slots, the plate is bent as shown in Fig. 2, and in this position the wire may be more conveniently engaged with the slots. After the wire has been inserted the plate is flattened out, as shown in Figs. 1 and at, which firmly and securely locks the end of the wire thereto, and prevents it from slipping or becoming accidentally detached.
The plate having the two slots forms a very simple and effective bale-tie, which will securel y hold the wire from slipping and form a secure lock therefor, the double slots being the essential featu e of the invention, as by the use of more than one the end of the wire is firmly held to the plate after it has been engaged therewith.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bale-tie consisting of a metal plate having two slots on line witheach other, with their ends tapering, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WALLACE B. CURTIS.
