SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,356, dated March 17, 1891.
Application filed September 27, 1889.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, CASSIUS M. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Duplex Steam-Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in d uplex steam-pumps; and it consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter set forth, and described in the claims.
Flgure l of the accompanying drawings is a View in perspective of a steam-pump illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of same, partially sectional.
A represents the'fraine portion; 13 and B, a pair of twin steam-cylinders; C, a frame for a duplex pump having a pair of removable cylinders, as 0, one on each side of the frame, to correspond with the steam-cylinders B B. The frame A, cylinders B B, and the pumpframe 0 are integral, and to further secure the aforesaid cylinders and the pump-frame 0 together a bar E is provided, as shown, said bar being integral with the said cylinders and pump-frame. The frame portion A is circular in cross-section, the edges a being higher than the bottom a for the double purpose of giving greater strength to the frame and to, form a trough or basin by which the drippings of oil and water may be gathered and passed out through an aperture, as b, in the bottom portion of said frame and carried off, in this case into the upper concave portion 1) of the pedestal D and thence through an aperture b and by such conduit as maybe provided to a desired place of deposit. The stuffing-boxes b are removably secured to the inner head portion of the cylinders B B and of the pump-frame O. A threaded aperture b is formed therein, the stuffing-box 11 having a threaded shank 6 adapted to turn into the threaded perforations I). Said stuffing-box may be provided with any of the approved followers.
In the pump-frame 0 there are provided chambers F, having inwardly-projected annular flanges b7 and b the frame provided Serial No. 325,331. (No model.)
with a central aperture 19 having an annular screw-thread, as d, provided on the inner face thereof. A cylinder, as G, is provided, which may be made of any suitable metal, preferably some strong non-corroding metal, the said cylinder being provided with annular collars, as (1' (Z and about the inner end with an annular screw-thread d adapted to he turned into the thread cl of the aperture 11 the collar (Z resting against the flange W. The aperture in. flange b is enlarged to allow the collar (1 to pass through, and the collar cl is fitted to said aperture, thus providing a removable pun1p-cylinder and means for securing it in alignment with the steam-cylinders. A cap or head G,secured to the end of the pump-frame, as shown, covers the aperture through which the cylinder is passed into position, as shown in Fig. Piston-heads H are secured to the rod J, and to actuate the valve-gear a clip removable, as K,is provided, into which the threaded ends h of the pump piston-rod J and the steam piston-rod L are turned. By this arrangement the clip may be released and either of the piston-rods re moved without disturbing the other; or the pump-rod J may be made of brass or other non-corrosive metal and the steam-rod of steel or iron, on which maybe secured a steampiston of any of the approved forms.
The valve-gear-supporting frame M is secured to and rests upon the bar E, and is of the form substantially as shown in the drawings, having a hood portion, as 7.2, downwardlyprojected lug portions 7.3, and outwardly-projected arms k to which is pivot-ally secured the rock-shafts N and 0 the former having lugs to which the valve-rods h are pivotally secured, and a downwardly-proj ected arm if, having prongs 70 to embrace the clip K. On the lower portion of said prong is provided a circular disk portion, as 7t, to engage the clip K, as shown in the drawings.
The conveniences provided for securing and for the removal of the pump-cylinders for renewing or for other purposes will be apparent, as well as the ease and economy by which non-corrosive cylinders may be placed in castiron frames, whereby the utility of the machine is greatly improved and the initial cost reduced:
The pedestal D is located centrally under the frame A, the steam-cylinders B B and the pump-frame C projecting outwardly from said frame, leaving the end portions free to expand or contract, as the case may be, without cramping the machinery or putting unnecessary strain upon the frame.
Heretofore the liability of the end portions to drop out of alignment by reason of the expansion of the frame has been noticeable, and to remedy this defect a connecting-bar E is provided, as shown, by which the steam-cylinders and the pumps are secured in alignment.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, What I claim as new,
and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination, the pump-casing, a chamber secured therein, annular collars the inner peripheries of which are of different diameters, a piston-cylinder havin screw-threaded engagement at one end with one of the collars, said cylinder provided with a collar at one end which abuts against the collar of the chamber possessing the less diameter and provided at its opposite end with a collar which fits and is supported upon the collar of the chamber possessing the greater diameter, and a removable head for the end of the casing, substantially as set forth.
