UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
.IOIIN \V. HARVEY, OF CUMBERIIAND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE Irl. IVRAY, OF SAME PLACE.
FEEDER ATTACH IVI ENT FOR CLOVER-H U LLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,148, dated March 10, 1891.
Application filed October 22, 1890. Serial No. 368,986. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. HARVEY, of Cumberland, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeder Attachments for Clover-I-Iullers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic feeding devices for clover-hullers, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my device, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a top view with the hood broken away. Fig. 3 is an `enlarged cross-section through one of the metal slats on the line of the pin. Fig. l is an enlarged longitudinal section through one end of a Slat and its link.
In detail, 1 represents the body of the machine; 2, the thrashing-cylinder; 3, the concave, and 4 the elevator.
5 is a picker, having teeth whose ends are curved backward to facilitate their clearance from the straw, and is mounted on an axle (3, having bearings in the sides of the hood 7 of the machine. On one end of this aXle is mounted a pulley 8, connected by a belt 9 to a smaller pulley lO, mounted on the outer end of the shaft l1, on which are mounted sprocket-wheels 12, as shown in Fig. 2, these being connected by drive-chains 13 to similar sprocket-wheels 14, carried on a sha-f t 15, having bearings in the sides of the machine below the revolving picker and adjacent to the throat 1G of the thrashiIig-cylinder. The drive-chains 13 are connected by metal slats 1S, these slats being riveted in jaws 17, formed on the inner sides ot' the links, as shown in Fig. 4, the slats being provided with pins 19, set obliquely, as shown in Fig. 3.
20 is a hopper into which the clover is thrown.
21 is a diagonal brace connected beneath the hopper and its opposite end to the machine for sustaining the parts. A pulley 2st is mounted on the end of the shaft of the picker 5, and a belt leads from this pulley to a pulley 23, mounted on the axle of the thrashingcylinder, which is driven from the main shaft in the usual manner. The endless apron formed of the chains 13 and slats 18 movesin a direction contrary to and much slower than the picker, and the' pins in the slats 18 are set to incline in a direction opposite the teeth of the picker, the latter revolving in the direction shown by the curved arrow, while the j belt travelsin a direction shown by the smaller arrows.
I am aware that endless belts for feeding attachments for thrashing machines have been heretofore known, and I do not broadly claim such a device as my invention; but I am not aware that the combination herein presented and claimed has ever before been known or used.
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is the following:
An automaticfeeding mechanism forthrashing-machines, comprising a hopper-frame secured to the front end ot the machine, abrace supporting such frame beneath, connected to the machine-frame below, a horizontally-moving endless belt formed of drive-chains, transverse metal slats connected thereto, the ends of the slats riveted in jaws formed on the links of the drive-chains, and carryi 11g-pins set obliquely in such slats and inclined to the rear, suoli endless belt carried on sprocket-wheels mounted on rollers journaled in the sides ot' the hopper-frame, the forward one of such rolls located contiguous to the throat of the thrashing-cylinder, the other roll journaled at the rear of the hopper-frame, all combined substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of October, 1890.
JOHN YV. HARVEY.
