Description

'w. n. EWART.
LINKS FOR DRIVE CHAINS. No. 188,115. Patented March 6,1877.
N. PETERS. PHO'l'D LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM D. EWART, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO EWART MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LINKS FOR DRIVE-CHAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,115, dated March 6, 1677; application filed January 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM DANA EWART, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Links for Drive-Chains, which is fully described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanyin'g drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of the link and attachment; Fig. 2, an end view of the same and Fig. 3, a cross-section thereof, taken on the line mar, Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to adapt the link for which Letters Patent No. 154,594 were granted to me September 1, 1874, and reissued April 20, 1875, No. 6,387, for use in corn-shellers.
The invention consists in casting the link with a large flange or projection, so that it operates as a carrier to feed the ears of corn to the shelling apparatus.
In the drawings, A represents a link, constructed as described in the patent referred to above. A wide flange, B, is cast in one piece with this link, having its support upon the sides of the latter, as is shown at a a in the drawing. This flange is located upon the upper side of the link, the opening in which it spans, and its lower edge is cut away, as is shown at b, Fig'. 2, so as not to interfere with the sprockets on the driving-Wheels. The link thus constructed is intended for use in corn-shellers in which the ears of corn are fed to the shelling devices lengthwise, and in a continuous line, the machine being constructed so that one or several lines of ears are running to the sheller continuously.
A chain composed of my ordinary links, with links like the one herein described interposed at suitable distances from each other, is provided for each feeder, and, running continuously over sprocket-wheels, forces the ears of corn to the sheller by bringing the flanges B against the ends of the ears.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The link A, having a central open space provided with a carrying-flange, B, extending from one side bar to the other and cast in one piece therewith, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM DANA EWART.
In presence of- H. C. WHITNEY, HEINRICH F. BRUNS.
