BANNER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,696, dated March 3, 1891.

Applidation filed June 25, 1890. Serial No. 356,707. (No model.)

To alt whom it may concern:

lie it known that I, HENRY W. MUNDHENK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gil man, in the county of Marshall and State of which can be readily drawn in and withdrawn from a suitable stalf.

A further object is to produce an effective and cheap banner, and one that will'beprotected froni dust, 850., when not in use; and with, theseobjects in View my invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the banner as it would appear open. Fig. 2 is a view of the banner 'closed in the staff. Fig. 3 is a detail view.

A represents the outer casing or stafi, the

stafi being bored or hollowed out according to the length of the banner to be used. The

. staff may be of any desired size or shape in order to suit it to the occasion for which it may be used, and may be made of wood, tin, papier-mach, or any other suitable'material. 13* represents the banner, which may be made of any suitable material and decorated to. suit the occasion for which it is to be used.

I O is a suitable ornament. attached to the top of said staff.

F F are suitable tassels secured to the banner. Secured to the head of the stalf is a suitable drapery F, which may be of any desired style or pattern. It will be understood that the banner may be decorated according to the occasion of its use.

The operation is as follows: The banner being closed, as shown in Fig. 2, thehandle E, attached to the rod E, is shoved up, thus raising the base-block and the banner. As soon as the banner is entirely out of the hollow staff, the elastic cords d d or the springs (Z d, whichever are used, forces the banner I open. The operation of closing the banner is obvious. In closing the banner finely-cut tissue paper may be sprinkled in it, and when it is again opened the tissue paper flies to the breeze, thus making a fine display.

In Fig. 4 I have shown the banner in combination with a cane, and as the construction and operation are substantially the same it is not deemed necessary to describe it apart from the rest of the views.

It is evident that manyslight changes and alterations may be made in the relative construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not confine myself strictly to the parts herein described. 9

Having fully described my invention, what I clai1n,and desire to secure by Letters 'latent,

1. A hollow stalf having a sliding block, a banner secured to said block, a rod for fore 5 ing said banner out ofv said stalf, and an elastic connection adapted to spread the banner, substantially as described.
