To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP W. STANHOPE, J r., of Peoria, in-the count-y of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form partof this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved riding-plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is avertioal sectional View through the adjustable bearings of the front furrowwheels. Figs. and 5 are details. Fig. Gis a perspective view of the frame.
The present invention is an improvement in riding or wheel plows; and its objects are to improve the mountings of the front adjustable furrow-wheel and render it adjustable vertically and horizontally or laterally in relation to the plow-beam by means of one lever, and to so connect the same with the rear caster that the front wheel or caster will be adjusted simultaneously or turned in the manner hereinafter specified.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the bearings and the adjusting devices of the furrow-wheel, its supportingframe and connections with the furrow-cast er, and in certain novel details of construction and combination of parts that will be clearly understood from the following de scription and claims.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the plow-beam, A the' standa-rd, and A2 the turn-plow attached thereto, as usual.
B designates a frame roughly diamondshaped in plan and formed, preferably, of heavy strap metal, and having one V-shaped portion B projecting from the land side of the beam, and a similar shorter V-shaped portion E projecting from the furrow side of the beam. The ends of portions B and E are united by means of similar U-shaped straps B2 E2, that pass underneath and partly embrace the beam. One strap B2 is transiixed by a bolt B3, passing through the beam, and the other strap is upheld by a bolt E3, also passing through the beam and through slot-s e3 in strap E2, as shown, so that the frame B can oscillate or have a certain amount of vertical rocking movement independent of the beam.

G designates a shaft playing through the opening in the casting F and-adj usted vertically and upheld therein by mea-ns of links G', pivotally connected to the upper end of the shaft and to the hand-lever g, which is pivoted at its lower extremity to casting F, and is provided with a hand-latch g', engaging with the teeth of sector F On the lower end of shaft G is preferably fixed a horizontal sleeve G2, through which passes a short shaft H, on which is journaled a furrow-wheel H', of suitable construction. This shaft can be adjusted longitudinally to shift wheel H to or from the shaft G, and is fixed by a set-screw h in sleeve G2. An arm F3 projects laterally from casting F toward the beam when the casting is turned so as to bring sector F and wheel H parallel with the beam. This arm is connected by a rod I with an arm d', projecting from the stem or holder D in a direction opposite to arm F3, but parallel therewith, so that by turning casting F to set wheel II at an angle with beam A the casterV D will be turned to an opposite but equal angle with the beam.

.l designates a plate attached to the furrow side of the frame and lying beneath the extremity of arm F3, and having a series of openings or teeth to engage a dog K, attached to arm l, so that the arm and casting can be locked thereby after shifting. The dog K may be connected by links with a hand-latch on lever g, or with other convenient operating device. By means of lever g it will be observed that the furrow-wheel can be adjusted vertically up or down, and at the same time the casting F, being journaled on the frame, can be turned horizontally without disturbing the vertical adjustment of the furrow-wheel, and with said wheel and lever g to set wheel Il atan angle to the beam, and the dog on arm F3 will lock the casting F when horizontally adjusted, at the same time the connection between arm F and d causes the caster-wheel to be turned at an angle to the beam equal to but opposite the position of wheel H. so that if the plow be turned the caster and furrow wheels will track or at least will travel on arcs of circles having a common center.
The adjustability of the furrow and caster wheels and their connections, as described, greatly facilitates the turning of the plow and preventslateral or torsional strain thereon or upsetting or overturning thereof By pivoting one end of the frame to the beam and securing the other so as to let it play vertically a certain degree the furrow cut by the share willbe of more uniform depth than would otherwise be the case, as the furrow-wheel in passing over small obstructions rocks the frame on the beam and does not lift the latter, as would be the case were the frame rigidly connected to the beam, and this peculiar mounting of the frame I consider one of the principal features of my invention, and another is the mounting of the furrow-wheel so that it can be adjusted vertically and turned horizontally by a single lever, and also thereby operate the caster.
Having thus described my invention, I claimn l. The combination of the plow-beam with the frame B, composed of side portions B and E, connected at their ends by pieces B2 and E2, which partly encompass the beam, and having projecting notched portions e3 at one side, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a plow with a frame connected thereto, a revoluble castihg mounted on said frame, a shaft playing through said casting, a wheel connected to said shaft, and the lever for vertically adjusting said shaft and for turning the casting, all substantially as described.
3. The combination of the plow and thc caster-wheel with a frame attached to and projecting from the 'furrow side of the beam, the casting mounted on said frame having a segment and a vertical opening, a shaft playing through said opening, a lever linked to said shaft for vertically adjusting it and for turning the casting, a wheel supported by and vertically adjustable with the shaft and horizon tally adjustable with the casting when the latter is turned, and the arm and devices for locking said casting when turned, substantially as described.

The combination of a plow and a frame carrying a furrow-wheel and having one end fast to the beam and the other loosely connected thereto, with a revoluble casting mounted on said frame, a vertically-adjustable shaft in said casting, a wheel supported by said shaft, and the lever, substantially as described, for shifting said shaft and casting,
as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the plow, the caster'- wheel at the rear end thereof, and the arm for turning said wheel, with the frame attached to the beam carrying a revoluble casting, the arm projecting inwardly from said casting and connected by alink with the arm of the caster, and the shaft carried by said casting and supporting a furrow-wheel, and a lever and links supporting and adjusting said shaftvertically and for turning the casting, substantially as set forth.
G. The combination, in a riding-plow, of the beam standard and share and castel' attached to the rear end of the beam, having an arm projecting from its stem, with a frame connected to and projecting on both sides of thc beam, the wheel mounted on the frame at the land side of the beam, the horizontally-revoluble casting` mounted on said frame at the furrow side of the beam and having a sector and an inwardly-projecting arm, the link-rod connecting said arm with the casterwheel arm, the lever pivoted on said casting, the shaft playing vertically therethrough, links connecting said shaft and lever, the

all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
