G. M. HUBBARD.
SNAP HOOK. x
Pat entedMar. 3, 1891 NIT-ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M.'HUBBARD, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO W. & E. T. FITCH, OF SAME PLACE.
SNAP-HOOK.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,567, dated March 3, 1891. Application filed January 5, 1891. Serial No. 376,735- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. HUBBARD, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Snap-Hooks,- and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in.*
Figure 1, a side view of the hook completed; Fig. 2, a top view of the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal central sectional view; Fig. 4:, a transverse section on line 00 0c of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a transverse section on line w :0 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6, a perspective view of the cap detached; Fig. 7, a perspective view of the body, hook, and loop with the cap and bolt removed; Figs. 8, 9, 1O, 11, and 12, modifications.
This'invention relates to an improvement in the construction of snap-hooks for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 347,108 were granted to me August 10, 1886.
The class of hooks to which the invention particularly relates is that in which the body is made tubular, so as to form a barrel within whichalongitudinally-slidingboltisarranged, with a spring to throw the bolt forward into engagement with the end of the hook which.
is formed on the body, the barrel being constructed with a longitudinal slot, through which a projection from the bolt extends, terminating upon the outside in a thumb-piece for the convenient manipulation of the bolt.
In my previous invention the body is constructed with a loop at one end and a hook at the opposite end, the body being substantially flat upon its upper side, combined with a cap constructed with a longitudinal recess upon its under side corresponding to the bolt, the recess opening forward toward the end of thehook, and theslotformed in theforward end of the cap, the cap being secured to the body so as to inclose the bolt and spring and permit the bolt to slide freely backward and forward.
My present invention has for its object the construction of a cap and its attachment to the body so as to make a firm connection between the body and cap, and yet give to the hook a neat and finished appearance; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the thickness of the body corresponds sub-.
stantially to the diameter of the bolt.
F represents the cap. This is made of inverted-U shape in transverse section, so as to form two checks to a, one on each side, as seen in Fig. 6, the bend of the cap corresponding to the shape of the bolt E, as did the cap in my previous patent; but in this case the cheeks are distant from each other corresponding to the thickness of the body, and so as to embrace the two sides of the body, the cheeks extending rearward substantially to the loop and conforming in shape substantially to the shape of the body, and so that the cheeks may set down over each side of the body, as seen in Figs. 1 and 4. The cap at its forward end is constructed with a longitudinal slot G, through which the thumb-piece H of the bolt may pass, as in my previous patent. The rear end of the cap is closed, so as to form a chamber forthe spring I between the end of the bolt and the end of the cap, as seen in Fig. 3. The rear end of the cap is cast with a projecting stud J from its under side, and the body is formed with a correspondin g hole K, and so that, the cap being set upon the body as seen in Fig. 4.,the cheeks will extend down each side and so as to inolose that portion of the body, while the stud J will pass through the hole K at the rear end to be riveteddown upon the reverse side, as seen in Fig. 5, which forms a firm security for that end of the cap.
'lransversely through the two cheeks and the body at the forward end a rivet L is introduced, which firmly unites the cap with the body. Under this construction the cheeks inclose and cover the sides of the body, so as to give a neat and finished appearance, and the union between the two parts is made so firm as to prevent possible separation.
The rear end of the cap may be constructed with a hook I) at the rear end, and so that instead of being riveted, as first described, it may pass through the opening or hole in the body and hook thereon, as clearly seen in Fig. 8, so as to hold substantially as firm as when riveted, as in the first illustration; or the cap may be constructed with a hook (1 upon each side, which will hook under the forward side of the loop, as seen in Figs. 9 and 10; or the cap may be constructed with two rivets, one on each side at the rear, and the body with corresponding holes, as represented in Figs. 11 and 12. In either case the cap is constructed with the same checks to inclose the sides of the body.
From the foregoing it will be understood that I claim nothing shown or described in my before-mentioned patent; but
hat I do claim as an improvement upon the said patent is A snap-hook consisting of a body A, constructed with a hook B at one end and a loop or attaching device at the opposite end, the thickness of the body corresponding substantially to the body of the bolt, combined with a cap F, of inverted-U shape, the legs of the U forming cheeks a a distant from each other corresponding to the thickness of the bodyand so that, the cap being set over the body, the said cheeks will embrace the two sides of the body from the forward end of the cap to the loop and form abolt and spring chamber between the said cap and body, the cap constructed with a longitudinal slot G at its forward end and constructed at its rear end with a projection adapted to engage with the body at the rear end, a bolt and spring arranged in the said chamber between the body and cap, and a rivet through the cheeks and body, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE M. HUBBARD.
