ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE YELLOTT, or TOWSON, MARYLAND.
HYDRAULIC RAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 447,550, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed November 3, 1890- Serial No. 370,250. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE YELLOTT, of Towson,in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvementsin Hydraulic Rams, of which the following is a specification.
To fully understand the nature of mypresent invention it must be understood that water moving through the drive-pipe of a hydraulic ram and completely filling it acts as a solid body, and that the power of the ram is limited only by the length of the drive-pipe, the velocity of the moving bodyof water, and the strength of the apparatus. The capacity of the Montgolfier ram is necessarily limited, in view of the ram-valve closing with a sudden stroke against a solid substance namely, the material surrounding the valveopening and which constitutes the valve-seat.
In my present invention,as hereinafter described, the collision of the valve and seat is prevented, and in view of this a ram may be constructed to work satisfactorily of any size or capacity, and a large body of water elevated as easily as a small one.
In the further description of my present invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of the improved ram, and Fig. 2 a plan of the same. Fig. 3 illustrates a double ram constructed in accordance with the said invention. Fig. 4 illustrates a modification hereinafter fully described.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, Ais the rain-chamber, and B and 0 represent, respectively, the drive and the delivery pipe. D is the delivery-valve, which is situated in the mouth of the air-chamber E. F is the plunger-chamber formed at the end of the ram-chamber opposite to the drive-pipe. It is provided with an outlet to, leading into a waste-chamber G. The discharge-openings from the waste-chamber are denoted by b. H is the plunger which forms the ram-valve, with its lower end adapted to slide in a recess c, situated in the lower part of the plunger-chamber F. This recess and theoutlet-opening a are bored so that the plunger will neatly fit therein, and the bottom of the flowing through the drive-pipe escapes past the disk J until its velocity causes the said disk to ascend and the plunger to be raised. As soon as the upper end of the plunger enters the outlet to the flow of waste water is cut off, the valveD is opened against the airpressure, and the Water enters the air-cham- 'ber. As the Water in the plunger-chamber becomes quiescent the plunger falls of its own Weight, and upon the outlet a being opened the waste flow of water is again established. The waste-water chamber is shown as provided with a cover, which is bolted thereto; but, if desired, this chamber may be opened or uncovered. The advantage of the cover is that it provides means for guiding the plunger-stem.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the ram is double, or, in other words, two rams are used, and their plunger-stems connected by a lever K, which has its fulcrum in a lug on the top of the air-chamber. NVith this arrangement two drive-pipesD are used and two discharge-valves. The object in uniting the plungers of the two rams is to make an alternate action and to enforce a uniform movement of the double apparatus.
Referring to Fig. 4:, it will be seen that the disk J is not on the plunger-stem, but on a separate one in an independent chamber, and its stem is connected to the plunger-stem by means of a lever. The operation of this ram is practically the same as that before described, and illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
' I claim as my invention 1. In a hydraulic ram, the combination of a ram-chamber With a plunger-chamber in communication therewith, and an outlet lead-- in its upward stroke to enter the outlet above it, and provided with a stem carrying a disk, around which is an annular space for the escape of Water, and a lever which connects the stems of the two plungers, whereby the same have an alternate action, substantially as specified.
GEO. YELLOT'I.
