SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,361, dated March 3, 1891. Application filed July 21, 1890. Serial No. 359,379. (No model.)
To all whom it Duty concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANK S. ROLFE, a
' resident of Olaremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction of sand-bands and of the means of connecting them with an axle of a wheeled vehicle. Heretofore the shells of sand-bands have been provided with an inner inturned flange, which was clamped between a screw-threaded nut placed within the shell adjacent to the flange and an exteriorly-screw-threaded hold er-fitted in the axle. This holder has been made in the form of a mutilated or incomplete ring, being slotted for the reception of the axle. An extension or arm of said holder was embraced by the ordinary yoke,which holdstogetherthe wooden and metallic sections of 'the usual form of carriage-axle and was thereby clamped to the bottom of the axle. By the present improvement the inner screw-threaded ring is dispensed with, and the inner end of the shell is provided with a head secured directly thereto and havingascrew-threaded opening adapted to screw upon the axle. The aforesaid holder is provided exteriorly on its main part with screw-threads, which are continuous with others formed on the axle upon which the interiorly screw-threaded head of the sand-band is screwed.
The invention consists in the construction herein described and particularly pointed out.

is a side elevation of an axle-holder. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the holder, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central section of the band and holder applied'to an axle.
The reference-letter A indicates a sheetmetal shell, which is wired at B to give increased stiffness. flange. D denotes a head secured in the sheet-metal shell by soldering or brazing the same to the flange O. The head is provided with a central screw-threaded opening of a size to receive the screw-threaded portion of the holderE. This holder is slotted, as shown, to, receive the axle, and is provided with an extension or arm F, that is adapted to be clamped against the bottom of the axle in usual manner bya yoke of common form. The upper part of the axle above the slot in the holder is by preference screw-threaded to engage the screw-threaded opening of the head D.
G is a set-screw for fastening the head to the holder, and H H are openings for the escape of dirt or sand that may find its way into the shell. The screw G is accessible through one of these openings.
It will be observed that when the shell and head have been soldered together, as shown and described, the sand band or box thereby formed can be screwed directly upon theaxle and holder, thus greatly simplifying devices of this character without lessening their efficiency.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a sand band or box for wagons or carriages, a shell having a flange soldered to a head, said head being provided with a screwthreaded opening adapted to receive a corresponding threaded axle-holder, substantially as set forth.
