ARM-REST FOR GUITARS.

Be it known that I, JosEPH ARENCIBIAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans,in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Arm-Rest and Sound- Extractorfor Guitars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in an arm-rest and an elevated sound-extractor for a guitar, banjo, or mandolin, in which a half-circnlar-shaped cover is placed over the bridge and tail-piece of a guitar, banjo, or mandolin, so as to prevent the arm of the performer on the instrument from coming in contact with the sounding-board, thereby deadening the sound; andthe objects of myinvention are to provide a device whereby the sound of the guitar is increased, so as to permit every note to be distinctly heard at a given distance from the performer. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of guitar. Fig. 2 is a side view of guitar. Fig. 3 is an end View of guitar. Fig. 4 is a side view of arm-rest. Fig. 5 is a side sectional view with arm-rest raised.

In constructing my device I attach to the rear portion of a guitar, as shown by A in Fig. 2, a ha]f-circular-shaped perforated rim, as shown by D. Attached to this rim I adjust a half-circular-shaped piece of material, which forms, as it were, a covering for D, being held in position by hinges O. The rim D extends a sufficient distance upon the sides of the body of a guitar to encircle the sounding-board, and the covering B when closed and resting upon rim D occupies the position as shown by B in Fig. l,

but may be raised or lowered, as shown in Fig. 5. Said covering B may be as artistically made as desired.

In practice the performer on the guitar holds same in position in the ordinary manner, except that his arm rests on lid or covering B,

thus preventing the sounding-board from coming in contact with the arm of the performer, and in this manner all deadening or mufiiing of the sound is prevented, every note is distinctly heard, and by means of the openings in rim D the vibration is in no manner impeded.

A striking advantage of my device is that by means of the covering B, which acts as an arm-rest, the sound of the instrument is increased, so as to permit every note to be distinctly heard in a hall or theater-building.

It is obvious that the arm-rest B may be fixed to the rim D; but it is preferable to hinge it, so as to aiford access to the bridge and tailpiece.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination, with the body and sounding-board of a stringed instrument, of the vertically-disposed perforated rim partially encircling the same at its rear end and the arm-rest secured to said rim above the strings of the instrument, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the body of a guitar or similar instrument having the perforated rim partially encircling the same at its rear end, of the arm-rest secured by a hinge to the ends of said rim and adapted to rest upon the same, substantially as specified.
