AUGUSTUS o. WOOLMAN, or BELLEFONTAINE, 01110.
HARNESS-LOOP PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,804, dated February 17, 1891.
Application filed May 29, 1890. Serial No. 353,647. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, AUoUsTUs C. WooL-' MAN, of Bellefontaine,in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Loop Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin harness-loop presses; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to produce a press for ornamenting and shaping the boxloops of harness, and in which the frame is made triangular, so that the clamp can be readily inserted and removed, and in case a short loop is being formed upon a long strap the ends of the strap can hang freely downward Without the necessity of having to double it up, and thus get it out of shape, and to produce a clamp which is especially adapted for forming the loops, and by means of which the loop can be given any desired amount of pressure either for the purpose of shaping or ornamenting it.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a press which embodies my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the press alone.
A represents the base of the press, which may be either of the shape here shown or any other that may be preferred, and which is intended to be fastened to a bench or any other support. Rising from this base A are the three standards, legs, or supports 13, which are placed in a triangular relation to each other and united at their upper ends by a triangular plate 0.
This entire press may be formed in a single casting, or the parts may be formed separately and secured together, as may be preferred. Passing down through the top plate 0 are the set-screws D, by means of which pressure is applied to the mold for either shaping or ornamentating the harness-loop, or both at the same time.
By means of the triangular shape of the press here shown, the clamp, which is made entirely separate and distinct therefrom, can be readily removed from and returned to position at the will of the operator, and in case a short loop is to be formed upon a long strap one or both ends of the strap can hang freely downward without the necessity of havingto bend and get it out of shape, as is the case where the press and the clamp are made to gether in the usual manner. This construction also allows the clamp to be adjusted to the loop before it is placed in the press, and thus allow the parts to be adjusted with greater precision than can be done in the usual manner. This construction also allows a cheaper, stronger, and simpler press to be produced than has heretofore been used for this purpose. The clamp consists of the frame G, one side of which extends parallel with the side of the loop that is to be formed, and has its lower edge sharpened to an edge, so that when this edge rests upon the blind it will not force it out of shape or mar it in any way. Extending from the upper edge of the main portion of the frame are the two arms H, whichextend at right angles to the plate, and which have their outer ends turned at right angles, so as to extend parallel with the plate and form bearings for the screws 1, which extend at right angles to the plate. These arms extend from the upper corners of the plate, so as to leave room under the arms for the passage of a strap or portion of the harness upon which the loop is being formed. This prevents the necessity of having to bend or double the strap or other portion of the harness in such a way as would get it out of shape. Forming a part of this clamp is a metallic plate J of sufficient strength to withstand any pressure that may be applied through the screws, and which extends parallel with the long side of the clamp. This plate J is as wide as the clamp is deep and bears against the outer side of the loop which is to be ornamented. After the loop, having a suitable shaping-rod placed inside of it, is placed in the clamp the plate J is forced against the outer edge of the loop and then the die is placed in direct contact with the outer surface of the loop, and a metallic bar is placed upon the top of the die, and then the clamp is ready to be placed in the press to receive the necessary amount of pressure through the screws D. The lower et ge oi. the plate .I' will rest upon the base-plate A, while the lower sharpened edge of the frame G will rest either upon the top of the blind or upon the baseplate, according to the kind oi" loop that is being formed.
In case hainetug loops are being formed and it is desired to prevent the sides of the clam p from pressing against the edges of the buckle and the broad end of the hame-tue short plates (7), of suitable length, are placed inside of the clamp upon opposite sides of thelo0p,as shown. These short plates 0 then receive the lateral pressure from the serewsl to prevent the buckle and broad end of the tug from being injured.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim in a harness-loop thesis, the combination, with a frame consisting elf a base-plate, a vertical support at the center of one edge,a vertical support at the corners of the opposite edge of said baseplate, cross-bars connected to their upper ends, and screws passed through the said bars between their ends, of a U- shaped (ilitlllplllg-flttllle having screws which extend parallel with the ends of the clamp, and a clamping-plate against which the inner ends of the screws bear, whereby the frame is especially adapted to receive the U-sl 1aped clamping-frame, substantially as dGSCllbOtl.
In testimony whereofl aftix mysignature 1n presence of two witnesses.
