Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC STRAUB, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVED MODE OF PROTECTING AND REPAIRING SHINGLE ROOFS.1
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,675, dated October 11, IE6/1.
To all u'llom Iit may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC S'IRAUB, of the city of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use fnl invention in restoring a wornout shingle roof bymeans ot' amineral covering, by which means the roof is completely renewed in all the water-shedding properties of the roof when new, without uncovering the building, which always incurs a risk of the rain injuring the building with its contents, such as plastering, papering, carpets, &c.
-l dissolve, by heat, shale-rock, bitumenized cement, or any other good roong'cement having the proper quality. I pour the melted cement, hot, upon the shingles with a suitable ladle or dipper, repeating the operation until the shingles are' covered, letting the liquid iow freely into all crevices, the operation being materially aided by the declination or descent ot' the roof. 1 pour the cement on the naked shingles, using no material between the cement and the shingles.
Figure 1 in the drawings shows a part protected, letter a, and a part unprotected, b. Fig. 2 is an edge view of a roof coated with cement.
l put on a top-dressing or a sand surface, (if wanted,) in this wise: Immediately after pouring thehot cement-thatis, when the shingles are'covered--I sift or throw on sand or tine gravel, letting all cool together.
What I claim, and desire Letters Patent for, 1s
The application of roofing-cement on naked shingles, substantially as above described, which makes a durable root' and a complete protection against all Weather and nearly so against all outside lire.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
ISAAC STRAUB.
