C ELERY= BLEACH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,499, dated February 17', 1891. Application filed September 29,1890. $erial No. 366,541- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN WILsoN', a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have inventedanew and useful Improvement in Celery-Bleachers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of celery-bleachers which consist of flexible shields or side inclosures located each side of a row of the plants for the purpose of bleaching the same.
The object of this invention consists in making the shields of oiled parchm ent, where by they are more durable and less susceptible to the injurious effects of the action of the weather.
Another object consists in a construction of shields made of oiled parchment in connection with the peculiar construction of parts hereinafter described whereby they are anchored to the ground and are attached together at the top, substantially in the manner set forth.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation with parts broken away, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line 3 3 in Fig. 1, looking from a point at the right.
The strips of oiled parchment are shown at A A. 'Attached to said parchment at suitable distances are sharpened stakes 13, one of said stakes being on the outside of said parchment and one of said stakes being 011 the inside of said parchment, and being so attached together that the parchment A. will be clamped between them, and being so .ar-
ranged that said stakes will lap by each other in a manner that the free end D can be inserted in the ground, as shown in Fig. 2, to serve as a support to hold the side shields of said parchment in place. these shields may be used year after year, since if the pointed ends of one of the sets of lappin -stakes should become rotted off the shield may be inverted and the other ends of the other lapping-stakes be inserted in the ground. It will be observed that these lapping-stakes B B are provided with ends D D, heretofore referred to, for the purpose above described, the ends of each set of said stakes extending beyond their lapping portions. Referring to Fig. 2, it will be observed that a strip of this oiled parchment A is placed each side of the growing celery. A tie string By this means or cord 0 is attached at one end to the stakes 15 of the parchment on one side, and after these side protectors have been placed in position this tie string or cord is looped around the upper ends D of the stakes B and drawn sufficiently tight to cause said side shields to press against the sides of the rows of plants to slightly compress the same at the top, and thus shielding them from the sun, permitting them to grow in a whitened or bleached condition. At a point where the blunt ends of the lapping-stakes terminate, a slot is cut, (marked here a,) into which the cord 0 is drawn in a sufficiently tight wedging manner to hold said cord at the desired tension, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. By means of such a construction this class of side shields are Very conveniently adjusted, and in considerat-ion of their lapping-stakes having the projecting ends D, and the fact that these side shields are oiled parchment, my celerybleacher is deemed to be more durable, since it can be used year after year, being less impervious to the effect of the weather than flexible shields of this class heretofore known. Such a construction will serve to protect young plants of any vegetation from the effects of frost, as well as serving to bleach celery or other plants, their adjustment and use in both instances being spbstantially the same in carrying out the benefits derived from both of said uses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A celery-bleacher consisting of the side strips of oiled parchment, the lapping-stakes attached to said strips at suitable intervals, and the tie-strings looped around and attached to the tops of said stakes, substantially as set forth.
2. A celery-bleacher consisting of the side strips of oiled parchment, the lapping-stakes attached to said strips at suitable intervals, said stakes being provided with the slots, and the tie-string looped around the top of said stakes and caught in the slots, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto subscribcd my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JONATHAN XVILSON.
