To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that we, AUGUSTUS G. KYLE and EDWARD J. KYLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Newville, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Vegetable-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in vegetable-cutters. The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of vegetable-cutters and prevent them slipping during operation when placed upon the table or other supporting-surface, and to keep the I 5 material within the sliding box, and to enable the knife to be readily cleaned and sharpened withoutnecessitatin g removal from the frame. The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vegetable-cutter constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the frame of a vegetable-cutter 3o composed of side pieces 2, and a bottom consisting of a stationary section 3 and a hingesection 4, and connecting the sides 2 of the frame, and the said frame is supported by legs 5 arranged atits ends, one being secured 3 5 to the lower face of the stationary section 3 and the other being secured to thehinge section and moving with the same. The section 4 of the bottom is hinged at the end of the frame by screws 6, and washers 7 are interposed between the heads of the screws and the sides of the frame to prevent wear, and the free edge of the hinge-section 4 is beveled and has secured to its upper edge a knife 8, that is centrally secured to the section by 5 screws 9, which prevent the knife being bent backward. The lower face of the hingesection is provided with a transverse groove 10, in which is arranged an adj usting-rod 11, which passes through the sides of the frame,

and has its head engaging one of the sides and a thumb-nut 12 engaging the other side and adapted to clamp the said side and hold the hinge-section and knife at any desired point of adjustment, and the said hinge-section is provided with buttons 13, which are 5 5 pivoted adjacent to the transverse groove 10, and adapted to span the groove and secure the adjusting-rod therein, and when it is desired to clean the knife the buttons are turned and the adjusting-rod loosened suffi- 6o ciently to permit the hinge-section to swing upward, and by securing the leg at that-end of the frame to the hinge-section it does not interfere with the movement of the latter, and should it be desirable to swing the hinge-section below the frame the adj usting rod can readily be removed, and it will be seen that the knife can be, easily cleaned or sharpened without necessitating removal from the'section. The edge 14 of the sta- 7o tionary section adjacent to the knife-blade is beveled, and a sliding box 15 adapted to contain the material to be cut is arranged upon the frame and is rectangular and composed of four sides and has its topand bottom open, and is provided at its lower edges of the side pieces 16 with strips 17, forming flanges, and adapted to engage in longitudinal grooves 18 in the inner opposed faces of the sides. 2 of the frame and to be moved longitudinally along the latter to bring material to be operated upon in contact with the knife. The end 19 of the sliding box is provided at the lower edge with a vertically-disposed blade 20, thatextends slightly below the box and prevents the escape of the material during the forward movement of the box, and the front or hinge end 21 of the section 4 is arranged flush with the bottom of the groove, whereby the section when the knife is in proper position for cutting is inclined and has its face above the upper face of the stationary section and adapted to close the front of the sliding box sufficiently to prevent the escape of the material at that point, and the 5 said end 21 is provided with a stop 22, which is centrally arranged and projects upward and is adapted to be engaged by the sliding box to prevent the latter leaving the grooves of the side pieces.

The sliding box, which is rectangular, is provided with recesses 23, which are oppositely disposed and arranged centrally 011 the inner faces of the sides and extending downward from the upper edges thereof about half-way the height of the box and comm unicating with and forming a continuation of vertical grooves 24 in the inner opposed faces of arms or standards 25, secured to the sides of the box and projecting upward therefrom and adapted to receive tenoned ends 26 of a handle portion 27, which is centrally and transversely secured to a follower-block 28, arranged within the sliding box and adapted to force the material into engagement with the knife 8, and the tenoned ends are adapted to rest upon the shoulders 29, which are arranged a sufficient distance above the lower edge of the box to bring the block 28 above the knife'and prevent engagement therewith and injury to the block. The upper edge of the vertical portion 27 is rounded, and oppositely-disposed curved grooves 80 are provided, which form with the upper rounded portion a convenient handle for operating the vegetable-cutter.

Theframe is arranged above the table, and a suitable receptacle can be placed below the knife to receive the material when out, and to prevent the frame slipping during the operation of the vegetable-cutter the lower ends of the legs are provided with points or spurs 31, which engage the table or other suitable supporting-surface.

It will be seen that the vegetable-cutteris simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and is capable of convenient and ready operation.

Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. In avegetable-cutter, the combination of the slidingbox, the frame consisting of the sides and the bottom composed of the stationa-ry' section, and the section 4, having one end provided with a knife and the other end hinged and provided with a vertical projection 22, forming a stop forthe said box, and the legs at one end of the cutter rigidly secured to the hinged section 4: and moving carried by the same, and the stop 22, arranged at the outer end of the hinged section and being formed by a projection, substantially as described.

In a vegetable-cutter, the combination of the frame comprising the sides and the bottom, having a hinged section carrying a knife and provided at its lower face with a transverse groove, the regulating-rod passing through the sides of the frame and provided with a thumb-nut and being adapted to be arranged in the groove, and the buttons pivoted to the hinged section to secure the rod in the groove, substantially as described.
