UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK M. ASHLEY, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN J. ASHLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
ALARM FOR STEAM-G EN ERATO RS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,488, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed April 18, 189Q. Serial No. 348,468. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK M. ASHLEY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Alarm for Steam-Generators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an alarm for steamboilers wherein escape of steam sounds a whistle indicating low or high water;V and the invention consists of an alarm of this character in which a casing is used to be connected at top and bottom with the boiler and Within which is fitted a horizontal cock, which is at all times subjected to substantially uniform heat from steam entering the casing, so that the valve will not stick and so that a small light lloat may be used and relied upon for properly actuating the cock.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specitication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my invention, shown as applied to the pipes of a water-gage; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modified form of lioat.
The boiler A is provided with a steam and water pipe marked B and O, respectively, and which, it' desired, may serve for the watergage G, and also to supply the proper connection of my new alarm O With the boiler. The gage may be omitted, if desired. The pipe B connects with the steam space of the boiler and the pipe O is located at low-Water line. The alarm comprises the chamberd, of oblong form, connectedat its ends with the pipes B C, so that it is supplied with steam and water at the same pressure and height as the boiler. Fitted in one side ofthe chamber d is the cock d', provided at its outer end with the pipe f, on which is mounted the steam-whistle f or other alarm to be sounded by the escape of steam. The inner end of the cock d is provided with a plug or valve, to be operated by the float 7L, for permitting steam to escape through the opening d2 in the cock to sound the alarm.
While various connections of the plug or valve may be devised within the scope of my invention, I prefer to employ a vertical plug or cut-off i, which works in a vertical passage 1l in the cock and is provided with one or more openings i?. The solid portion of the plug or cut-ott normally closes the passage d2; but when the Water in the boiler falls below the low-water line the opening 2 will coincide with the passage d2 and permit steam to blow through the cock and sound the alarm. When two apertures are made in the cut off or plug, as in Fig. l, the lower one will correspond with high-water line in the boiler, and when the water in the boiler rises above this line the lower aperture 2 will coincide With the passage d2 and allow the escape ot' steam to sound the alarm. In some cases I shall attach the fioat h directly to the plug or cut-off, as in Fig. 2, while in others I shall employ a frame m, as in Fig. l, in which the float is adjustably held, so that it may be raised or lowered as circumstances require. A
When steam enters the casing, all that portion of the cock which projects into the casing becomes uniformly heated, and also the air in the passage d2, so that all or nearly all of the pressure of steam upon the inner surface ot' the valve c' is neutralized, and all danger of sticking or failure of action of the valve is obviated, and a small and light float may be successfully used.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* l. An alarm for steam-boilers, comprising a chamber connected at top and bottom to the boiler and provided with an inclosed horizontal cock formed with a passage which communicates through a pipe with an alarm, in combination with an inclosed lloat attached to a rod provided at the top with a valve which works in a seat in the inclosed horizontal body of the cock, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an alarm of the character described, the combination, with a case having water and' steam connections with the boiler, of an axially-bored cock iitted in said case and connected with an alarm, a vertical plug or cut-off movable in said cock across the axial bore thereof and having transverse apertures, and a oat rigidly secured to said plug for actuating the latter, substantially as shown and described.

ALEXANDER A. GANIAED, DELBEETl GREENE.
