Be it known that we, HENRY BEoHTEL and LOUIS FRITZ, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Signals for Steam-Boilers, of Y which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple, efficient, and reliable device which is adapted for use as a Flow-water or highwater signal. The invention consists of a device com prising a casing containing a horizontallydisposed expansion-rod, a right-angular lever hinged to the inside of the casing and connected with its short arm to said expansionrod, while the other or long arm is attached to a valve-stem located in a valve-body communicating with a whistle.
Our invention further consists of the improvements hereinafter more fully described,
The invention will be more fully understood taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of our improved device adapted for use as a low-water signal and showing the casing, the horizontally-disposed expansion-rod, the right-angular lever with its connection, and a whistle. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation similar to that shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that the position of the hinge-point of the right-angular lever is changed, adapting the device to be used as a high-water signal; and Fig. at isan end view showing an adjusting device for the said expansionrod.
Referring now to the drawings for a further description of our invention, A is a casing, of cast-iron or other metahforming a chamber a. This chamber communicates with the inside of the boiler B. and is secured to the shell thereof by means of the nipple I), screwed into the lower try-cock hole if the device illustrated in Fig. l is to be used as a lowwater signal, and in the upper try-cock hole if the device illustrated in Fig. 3 is to be used as a high-water signal. The expansion-rod d may be attached with one end to the casing A, the other end being, as before stated, pivoted at d to the rightangular lever 0; but preference is given to an adjustable connection, (shown in Figs. 1 and 4,) because the various members of the device can be set better and so asthat the valve-stem 0. is pressed snugly against the valve-seat cfiwhen the expansion-rod d is subjected to a low temperature. This adjustable connection comprises the threaded nipple a of the casing A, through which the threaded end of the expansion-rod (1 protrudes. A nut d is fitted onto the threaded been loosened and the nut d be turned to effeet the proper adjustment of the valve-stem c to the valve-seat a The construction of the high-Water signal shown in Fig. 3 is the same as that shown in Fig. 1 of the low-water signal, with the exception that the right-angular lever c is hinged at c and the connection of the expansionrod 01 to the short arm 0 of the lever c is made at d in order that when thewater rises in the boiler and the horizontal expansion or in this case the contraction rod is entirely at once immersed in the water, and thereby subjected to a lower temperature than it has been when surrounded by steam, the rod d is contracted and operates, by means of the right-angular lever c, the valve-stem c to admit steam to the whistle to give a signal that the Water has reached the high-Water mark.
We are aware that signals have been provided having expansion or contraction tubes in which the Water or steam circulates and which are arranged to actuate a valve to cause signals to be given; but as these tubes are surrounded by the atmosphere they are not efficient and reliable, as will be understood by those skilled in the art to which our invention pertains.
Having thus fully described the nature and objects of our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A signal for steam-boilers comprising a casing in communication with the boiler, a valve-seat formed with said casing, a Whistle attached to said valve-seat, a right-angular v lever located inside the casing and hinged to a projection thereof, a horizontally-disposed expansion-rod located inside the casing and valve-seat and a Whistle connected with said casing, a right-angular lever located inside the casing and hinged to a projection thereof, a horizontally-disposed expansion-rod located inside the casing and having one of its ends adjustably secured to the said casing and the other to one arm of the said lever, and a valve-stem fitting the said valve-seat and being connected to the other arm of the said lever, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a signal for steam boilers, the combination with a casing, a valve-seat, a valvestem, a lever and a horizontally-disposed expansion-rod located within said casing and having one end pivoted to said lever and the other end threaded and protruding from the said casing, of means for adjusting the said rod and valve-stem, comprising a nipple on said casing, a nut on said threaded end of the expansion-rod, and a jam-nut screwing over the said nipple,subst-antially as and for the purposes set forth.
