Be it known tharl, ANDREW B. HENDRYX, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new Improvements in Fishing-Reels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the lettersof reference marked thereon, to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same,

My invention relates to an improvement in reels for fishing-rods, the object being to provide them with brakes of simple construction and convenient operation.

Vith these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with the windingdrum of the reel, of a normally-retired brake and means for operating the same to bringit into engagement with the said drum.

My invention further consists in the coinbination, with the winding-drum, the cap, and the adjacent frame-plate of the reel, of a spring brake-arm secured at one end to the 4o outer face of the said frameplate and adapted at its other end to enter an opening formed therein and engage with the adjacent flange of the said drum, and an operating-button mounted in the said cap and arranged to op crate the said brake-arm.

My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

As herein shown, the brake-arm A is made from a flat piece oi'l sheet metal in the general Form of a crescent and bent so that when one ot its ends has been riveted to the outer face of the frame-plate B of the reelits main portion will stand away-from the face ot the said plate, which is provided with an opening C, through which the free end oi' the said arm engages with the cuter face of the adjacent ilange D of the skeleton winding-drum E, the said free end ot the arm being thereto bent 6o inwardly and cupped, as shown. Normally the spring of the arm holds its free end out of contact with the said flange with which it is engaged for braking the drum by means of an operating-button F, located upon. the outer face of the cap G, which-is provided with an elongated slot H, through which the stem of the button passes, the said stem carrying a small collar I, which engages with the inner face ot the cap on opposite sides of the slot 7o and holds the button in place under sufficient friction to cause it to be retained with its stein in any position in the slot, where it may be placed by the fingers of the angler. The said button is located so that by moving itin one direction its stem or collar will force the brakearm inward and press the tree end thereof into engagementwith the hub-frange. By moving the but-ton in the opposite direction the arm is allowed to recover and spring` away 8o from the flange, so that the drum is normally free.

In the modified construction shown by Figs. G and of the drawingsthe brake-arm J is constructed and arranged the same as shown in the preceding figures of the drawings; but the operatingbntton K is located upon the edge instead of upon the face of the cap, the edge of which is thereto provided with an elongated slot L, in which a loop M of sheet 9o metal attached to the button plays, the said loop being arranged for the engagcmentot its inner edge with the ilat outer 'face of the brake-arm- A piece of spring-wire N passing transversely through the base of the loop, 9 5 engages with the adjacent surfaces of the edge of the cap and frictionally retains the button in its adjustments. The operation of the above-described modified construction is the saine in principle as that of the other forms of my device.

In both eonstruetionstl'ie brake is normally retired and only brought into play when needed. Both constructions are also very siniple and durable and not liable to get out of order. It' desired, however, the operatin button may be arranged to keep the brakearln normally engaged with the drum.

I do not claim, broadly, a fishing-reel having a frietional brake adapted to be adjustably applied to the spool, as such, I am aware, is not new.

lHaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf- In a reel for shing-rods, the combination ofthe Winding-drum, the cap, and the adjacent frame-plate thereof, a spring-brake A, rigidly attached by one end to the outer face of said plate, the plate constructed with an opening through it onto the flange of the drum, the said brake bent outward from its rigid point of Contact with the plate and so as to present an inclined surface upon its outside,its other end turned inward through said opening in the plate and so as to bear upon the flange of the drum, and a sliding button arranged in the cap and adapted to bear upon the inclined outer surface or back of the brake, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
