Description

C. EDGERTON. STEAM HEATING APPARATUS.
Patented Jan. 27 1891,.
I VENTOR A 1 w Mrom/Ey. 3
WITNESSES: Z- MQ 6 604 M UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
CHARLES EDGERTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM-HEATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,396, dated January 2'7, 1891.
Application filed January 7, 1890- Serial No. 336,123. (NO model.)
To an whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDGERTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam Heating Apparatus, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Myinvention consists of means whereby the live steam of a steam-heating apparatus is employed as a motor for causing the return of the water of condensation to the boiler or generator.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of steam heating apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line m 00, Fig. 3, of motor constituting part of my invention. Fig. 3 represents a section on line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates radiators, B the pipes which convey steam from the boiler or generator 0 to said radiators, and D designates the pipes which lead from the radiators for conveying the water of condensation therefrom, which parts, excepting the features of my invention applied thereto, are as usual in steam-heating apparatus.
E designates an engine, which is connected with the generator 0 by a pipe F and has the supply end of the pipes B connected therewith.
' G designates a pump, which has connected with it the discharge end of the pipes D and also a pipe H, which isin communication with the watenspaee of the generator. The said engine and pump consist of two independent casings E and G and a shaft G common to said engine and pump, extending through said casings. Blades J are connected to the shaft in the engine-casing E, and blades J are also attached to said shaft in the casing G of the pump G. Live steam from the generator c11- ters the engine E, and, striking the blades J thereof, rotates the shaft G The steam passes out from the said engine through the pipe B to the radiators A. The rotation of the shaft G by the live steam, as stated, imparts movement to the blades J of the pump G, and the water of condensation collected by pipes D is sucked up into and through the said pump and forced out through the pipe H into the boiler-of the generator, where it is again converted into steam.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a steam-heating apparatus, a steam-generator, a radiator, a live-steam-conveying pipe, and a pipe for the return of exhaust or condensed steam, combined with an engine or motor, a pump, the said engine or motor and pump having a shaft common to both and respectively connected to the live and exhaust steam pipes, and a pipe connected to said pump and generator, whereby the water of condensation or exhaust is forced back to the boiler of said generator, substantially as described.
