Steam Blast Apparatus.
Patented Oct. 4, 1864.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEAM-BLAST APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14,533, dated October 4, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs A. J ASPER, of Gharlestown, in the county ofMiddlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Steam-Blast Apparatus for Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in theaccompanying drawings, of whichi Figure 1 is a front elevation Fig. 2, alongitudinal and vertical section; Fig. 3, a transverse section, and Fig. 4 a top view of it.
For the purpose of increasing or improving the draft of a furnace by the introduction of the waste steam ofa steam-engine into the ashpit of such furnace an apparatus composed of a series of upright perforated hollow columns or pipes and-a horizontal conduit opening into them, respectively, and serving to support them is not new.
In carrying out my invention 1 have combined with such an apparatus, or one essentially like it, certain devices for keeping it free and clean from deposits and condensed water, the Whole being substantially as hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, A A A A denote a series of pipes arranged parallel and vertically, and extending, respectively, from and opening out of a steam conduit or pipe. 13. Each pipe Ais perforated in that side of it which is to be next to the ashpit of the furnace with a series of holes, a a a a, for the discharge of steam from the pipe. Furthermore there is combined with the conduit B and the series of perforated blast-pipes Aa horizontal waste or blowottpipe, 0, on which the several blast-pipes are erected, and into which each of them opens. This pipe 0 is closed at one end and open at the other, and besides, near its open extremity, it is provided with a stop-cock, D, whereby flowa-ge from the pipe may be interrupted or caused to take place at pleasure. There is also a stop-cock, E, arranged in the conduit B, and in rear of the series of blast pipes leading out of such conduit, whose end in advance of the waste blast-pipe is closed. Near to the stop-cock E, and in rear of it, a dischargepipe, F, provided with a stop-cock, G, leads out of the conduit B.
The apparatus so constructed is to be supported by a suitable open frame, H, by which the whole may be inserted in the side or other suitable part of the brick-work of the ash-pit of a steam-boiler furnace.
In the operation of the said blast apparatus it is to be supposed that the waste steam of an engine is to pass into and course through the conduit B, and from thence into the several blast-pipes A, from whence it will be discharged by the orifices a of such pipes.
The condensed water, as well as the dirt or extraneous matters of the steam, instead of collecting in the blast-pipes,will run down into the blow-off pipe 0,1"rom whence they may be ejected by simply opening the stop-cock D and allowing steam to rush through the pipe 0 and out of its open end.
By means of the two stop-cocks E and G and the auxiliary waste-pipe F, the blast of the steam may be diminished in degree, or regulated as circumstances may require, as by partially closing the stop-cock E I diminish the flowage of steam into the blast-pipes. The balance of the steam and any condensed water of the conduit due to such balance may be suffered to escape by the pipe F, its stopcock, under such circumstances, being opened to the proper degree. The two stop-cocks E and G and the pipe F also answer other useful purposes.
I make no claim to a steam-blast apparatus composed of a conduit or pipe and a series of perforated hollow columns or pipes leading therefrom; but 4 WVhat I claim as my invention is- 1. My new or improved steam-blast apparatus for furnaces, the same consisting of the combination and arrangement of the dirt and condensed-water collecting pipe 0, provided with a stop-cock, D, with a series of perforated blast-pipes, A, and the conduit B, the whole bein arranged substantially as and for the purpose or objects as specified.
2. The combination of the auxiliary wastepipe E and the stop-cocks G and E, with the conduit B, the series of blast-pipes A, or the same and the dirt an d condensed-water-collecting pipe (3, furnished with a stop cock, D, as set forth, the whole being arranged substantially as and to operate in manner and for the purpose as hereinbefore explained.
