Description
NlTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. Ll'lTLEl lELl), OF MANCHESTER, NE\V HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUTCHER TEMPLE COMPANY, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOOIVl-TEMPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,148, dated January 20, 1891.
Application filed June 18, 1890. Serial No. 355,842. (No model.)
1'0 uZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. LITTLE- FIELD, of Manchester, county of Hillsborough,
State of New Hampshire, have invented an.
5 Improvement in Loom-Temples, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
[0 This invention has for its object the production of a novel spindle for loom-temples, the construction being such as to obviate the use of oil between the spindle and templeroll, thus avoiding the spotting of the material being woven. The body of the spindle supporting the temple-roll has a vitreous coating or enamel applied thereto in such manner as to become a permanent part of the spindle. To aid in holding the spindle in place, one end thereof is made to enter ahole in an upright part of the temple-head, and at or near its other end the spindle has an enlargement provided with a shoulder which comes in contact with a part of the free end of the cap, thus forming a brace, the said enlargement having an ear through which is inserted a screw to confine the spindle in place, said screw entering a lug projecting from the temple-head. I have applied the 0 vitreous material to the inner side of the enlargement or head of the spindle, to thus constitute a bearing for the end of the roll.
One part of my invention consists in a loomtemple spindle provided with an enlargement 5 5 at one end and having its body coated with vitreous material to form a bearing for the temple-roll, substantially as will be described.
Another part of my invention consists in a loom-temple head having a projecting lug combined with a spindle having an enlargement provided with an ear, the said lug and ear being connected by a screw, substantially as will be described.
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a temple 5 embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof on line as or, Figs. 1 and 3,1ooking toward the left; and Fig. 3, a section in the line 3 Fig. 1.
The pod 0., cap a, upright wall a prefer- 5o ably cast in one piece, and the flange a constitute a temple-head. The flange a has suitable bolt-holes, by which to attach the temple-head to any usual working parts of a temple in the usual manner. The cap a has cast upon its upper side an ear d provided with suitable threads to receive the bolt or screw I), which is extended through an ear 0 of the enlargement or head 0 of the spindle c, upon which in practice may be mounted to turn any usual burr-roll e. The inner side of this enlargement c is provided, as shown in Fig. 3, with a shoulder 2, which fits the concaved interior surface of the cap, to aid in giving stiffness to the spindle. Just beyond the shoulder 2 is a shoulder 3 of smaller diameter.
The body of the spindle is coated, or has applied to it or baked thereon in the usual manner a vitreous coating, as f, which-may be of any usual material, and preferably this vitreous coating is applied to the inner end of the enlargement or head 0 and made to lap over the shoulder 3, thus forming a bearing for one end of the roll.
I have shown the vitreous coating on the spindle as extended to the end thereof and into a bearing 10 in the upright a of the head, the end of the spindle resting loosely in the said bearing.
In another application, Serial No. 355,841, filed June 18, 1890, I have claimed broadly a vitreous-coated spindle for a temple-roll.
I claim 1. A loom-temple head having a lug (6 projecting therefrom, combined with a spindle having an enlargement or head provided with an ear 0, the said ear and log being connected by a screw, substantially as described.
2. The loon1-temple head, combined with a spindle having an enlargement or head 0 provided with a shoulder, as 2, to fit the inner side of the cap, the end of the said spindle opposite the said enlargement taking a bearing in the upright wall of the temple, and a connecting device between the said spindle and head, substantially as described.
3. A loom-temple spindle provided at one end with an enlargement or head, and having its body coated with vitreous material to I00 form a bearing; for the temple-r011, substan- In testimony whereof I have signed my tially as described. name to this specification in the presence of 4. A loom-temple spindle having an entwo subscribing witnesses.
