To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN LOWENDAHL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, having invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vindows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of windows in which the sashes are removable from the frame for convenience of cleaning, glazing, painting, or repairing.
The prime object of my invention is to enable the ready and convenient withdrawal or removal of the sash or sashes of a window from the frame thereof and the replacing of the same in position in the frame after having been removed.
Another object of my invent on is to have the sashes so connected with the frame that they may be totally detached therefrom.which is of great advantage and convenience, especially in office buildings and storage houses when it is desired to take into or put out of a window any large or bulky object or body of greater dimensions than either of the sashes.
Another object is to have the parting-strip and the stop or guide-strip separately and independently removable from the frame, whereby at any time, if desired, the lower sash may be taken from the frame and entirely disconnected from the window without in anywise disturbing the parting-strip or the upper sash in their normal positions; and finally, to provide at a comparatively small cost means by which the foregoing objects may be accomplished of such a character as to be adaptable to all ordinary windows now in use,
and which may be attached to and made a part of the window by the expenditure of very little labor, expense, or skill. I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a portion of the window-frame and the sashes thereof, showing devices applied thereto embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail horizontal section through one side of the sashes taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar view taken 011 the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, an enlarged face View of a portion of one side of the window-frame with the covering-plate partly broken away to more clearly disclose the locking-bolt5 Fig. 5, an enlarged detail vertical section through the sash on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3, showing the locking devices at the'upper and lower ends of the sash; and Fig. 6, an enlarged detail elevation of one corner of the sash, partly in section, showing my improved means for securing the sash-cord to the sash.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates the window-frame; B, the outer guide-strip thereof; C, the middle or parting strip, and D the stop orinner strip usually in windows, between which, respectively, work the upper and lower sashes E F, suspended upon ordinary sash-cords G, detachably secured thereto at the'side edges by means of hooks H (see Fig. 6) on the ends of the cords,engaging eyes Iin suitable recesses formed in the side rails of the sashes for the purpose hereinafter described.
The inner guide-strip or stop D and the parting or middle strip C are formed in two parts or sections, the upper part thereof being rigidly secured in position upon the window-frame, while the lower parts thereof, extending to a point above the top of the lower sash, being removably or detachably connected with the frame. To this end the frame is cut away or recessed at convenient distances from the upper and lower bars of the lower sash and the recess covered with a plate J, provided with a transverse slot K, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) extending from the outer edge of the plate inwardly a suitable distance, in which slot works a sliding screwbolt L, the head of which works in the recess and engages the under side of the plate adjacent to the edges of the slot, the shank or body portion thereof, which is screw-threaded at its end, passing outwardly through a perforation in the stop or guide-strip and projecting sufficiently beyond the face of said strip to receive a thumb-nut M, by means of which the strip may be clamped firmly against the frame and thus be held securely in any adjusted position. Hence whenever it is desired to remove this section of the stop it is only necessary to loosen up the thumb-nuts. and slide the screw-bolt, with the strip attached thereto, out of the slot in the covering-plate, thus completely detaching this sec tion of the strip from the window-frame, although, obviously, it may be replaced when desired by reversing the operation.
The lower section of the parting-strip is held in place by means of lock-bolts N, working through suitable guides 0, formed on the under side of the covering-plates, the inner ends of which bolts enter sockets or pass,
through perforations P in the parting-strip, as shown in Figs. 2 and -l.-, and thus securely lock the same in position when desired. These locking-bolts are provided with a suitable stop Q (see Fig. 4) formed thereon and adapted and arranged to engage one of the guides on the covering-plate, so as to limit the movement of the bolt, and for convenience of withdrawal this bolt is also provided with short chains R, attached to the ends thereof, or any other suitable device. For the purpose of retaining these bolts more securely in their locking position against accidental withdrawal, I provide a bindin g-sprin g S, (see Fig. 4,) bearing thereon at one side, the tension of which serves to prevent a 100 free movement of the bolts. of the bolts from engagement with the sockets or perforations in the parting-strip the latter may be readily removed from its socket and detached from the window-frame. The parting and guide strips may be made sectional and detachable upon either or both sides of the window-frame, as desired.
In practice when it is desired to remove the lower sash from the frame it is only necessary to detach the stop; but whenever the upper sash is to be removed both stop and partingstrip will have to be detached, and in the event it is desired to wholly detach the sashes from the window-frame, instead of leaving them suspended on their cords after being removed from the frame, which has hereto- Obviously upon a withdrawalfore been the practice, the hook-andeye connection between the sash-cords and the sashes furnishes a ready and convenient means for accomplishing this end.
My invention possesses numerous advantages, chief among which is its adaptability to all windows, whether already in use or not, enabling the total detachment of both sashes from the window-frame, which is of great con venience, especially in the ease of oftice and other public buildings when it is desirable to pass large and bulky articles-such as safes and furniture-through the window, which could not be done if the article were larger than the lower sash, if the window were constructed in the ordinary manner, without injury to the window, and in conclusion I may state that the entire parting-strip and stop might be removed from the window, instead of only the lower section thereof, as shown and described.
Having described my invention, What I claim,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a window, the combination, with the frame provided with recesses along the inner edge thereof, the covering-plates for said recesses, provided with transverse slots extending inwardly from the edge thereof, the stop or guide-strip, and the parting-strip, of screwbolts working in said slots and projecting through perforations in the guide-strip, said bolts being provided with heads engaging the under side of said plates, and thumb-nuts fitting the serew-threaded ends thereof, and lock-bolts working through guides on said plates and engaging the parting-strip, substantially as described.
