IMPROVEMENT lN BUTTONS FOR. DOORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,4711, dated September 27, 1864.

.To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY UNDERWooD, of Tolland, in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Bntton; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l isa front or face view of myinvention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line a: fr, Fig. l.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in buttons, such as are applied to doors for the purpose of keeping them in a cosed state.

The invention consists in constructing the button in such a manner that it will be self catching or self-locking-that is to say, engage itself with the door when the latter is closedthereby avoiding the necessity of the button being adjusted by hand so as to fasten the door each timeit is closed.

A represents a circular plate composed of two parts, a a', one part, a, being considerably larger than the other part, a', the latter' being attached to the door and the other to the easement by the side of the door. To the larger part a of the plate the button B is attached at one end by a pivot, b, on which it works freely, and a guide, c, is attached to the part a in which the buttonB works, said guide leaping the button against the plate. The part a of the plate is formed or cast with a projection, d, at its upper part, and the other part, a', is also formed or cast with a projec tion, d,a continuation of which is on the part a. These projections limit or control the movement of the button B and keep it in an inclined position, so that it cannot be shoved up or raised to a vertical line nor descend to a horizontal one. The outer or upper end of the button B is provided with a beveled edge, e, at its lower side, and this outer end is made sufciently heavy to cause the outer part of the button to fall on the projection d. By this arrangement, when the door is being closed, and its edge reaches the button B, the former will strike the beveled edge e of the button and force the latter upward, and when the door is closed the button will drop or fall over the part a ofthe plate A and secure the door in a closed state. Thus a door may be buttoned and secured in a closed state by simply shoving it to such a position, and the usual trouble of turning the button after closing the door avoided. This will be found eX- treinely convenient, especially if a person in passing through a door is cau-ying articles with both hands or has both hands engaged.

Having thus described my invention, l cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A button, B, attached at one end to a plate, a, by a pivot, b, and in au inclined position, and provided with a beveled edge, c, at its outer end, in connection with stops or projections d d on the plates a and a', all arranged to operate substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein set forth.
