SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,815, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed August 4, 1890. Serial No. 360,880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK II. BOLTE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to bicycles, being designed as an improvement on the device set forth in my application filed May 24, 1890, Se-
rial No. 353,007; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and
subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a bicycle provided with myimprovements, and Fig. 2 a sectional plan view taken on line 2 2 of the preceding figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the fork for a wheel B of a bicycle, and, like in my previous application, hangers, such as the branches of a yoke C, are pivot- 2 5 ally connected to the furcations of the fork, the ends of these hangers or yoke being slipped onto the axle D of said wheel.
As the peculiarities of the pivot connection between each fork furcation and the yoke branches or hangers constitute part of the present invention, I will now proceed to describe the same in detail.
The lower end of each fork furcation is provided with an opening that registers with an- 3 5 other opening in the adjacent side of the yoke, and inserted in these registering openings is the shank b of a head E, said shank being provided with a tapped recess for engagement with a screw F, the head of the latter being run down against said yoke, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
Each head E is provided with a transverse opening for the reception of the inner end of a volute spring G, the outer end of this spring being preferably connected to the axle D, al-
though it may be desirable at times to connect the latter end of the spring with the adjacent end of the yoke; but in either case said yoke is spring-controlled.
In order to regulate the tension of the springs, the inner ends of the latter are adjustable in the heads E, and said ends of the springs are held in their adjusted positions by means of set-screws II, as best illustrated in Fig. 2. 5 5
As one of the essential features of the present invention is the form and arrangement of the springs G, particular attention is called to the fact that the inner ends of the same are secured to the headed shanks b, and that these shanks form the pivots for the yoke, while at the same time the outer ends of said springs are so arranged as to move with the connected ends of the axle D and said yoke.
In consequence of the arrangement of parts as just described the springs will wind and unwind on a circle struck from the shanks or pivots Z9 as said yoke moves in either direction thereon, and thus I attain the greatest possible amount of elasticity with the least possible breaking strain, this being of decided advantage to the rider of a bicycle provided with a spring-controlled yoke such as I have described in this and my previous application. 7 5
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, is-
1. In a bicycle, the combination of a fork, a yoke pivoted to the furcations of the fork, an 8c axle connecting the ends of the yoke, awheel on the axle, and volute springs having their inner ends also connected to the fork furcations and their outer ends so arranged as to move with said yoke on a circle struck from 8 5 the yoke-pivots, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bicycle, the combination of a fork, a yoke pivoted to the fur-cations of the fork, an axle connecting the ends of the yoke, a wheel on the axle, and volute springs having their inner ends adjustably connected to the fork furcations and their outer ends so arranged as to move with said yoke on a circle struck from its pivots, substantially as set forth.
3. In a bicycle, the combination of a fork 5 having the furcations thereof provided with openings, a spring-controlled yoke having openings in register with those in the fork fu rcations, heads having tapped shanks engaging said registering openings, screws engag- 10o ing the shanks, heads on the screws opposed to the yoke, an axle connecting the ends of said yoke, and a wheel on the axle, substan tially as set forth.
4. In a bicycle, the combination of a fork having the furcations thereof provided with openings, a yoke having openings in register with those in the fork furcations, heads provided with transverse openings and having shanks retained in said registering openings of the fork furcations and yoke, an axle connecting the ends of the yoke, a wheel on the axle, volnte springs haying their inner ends inserted in the openings in the heads and their outer ends so arranged as to move with said yoke on a circle struck from the pivots thereof, and set-screws arranged in said heads to bind against saidinner ends of the springs, substantially as set forth.
