UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK IV. BENDER, OF NARBERTH PARK, AND FERDINAND L. SCIIEIDEMANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,813, dated December 80, 1890.
Application filed July 10, 1890. Serial No. 358,289. (No model.))
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK W. BEND- ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Narberth Park, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, and FERDINAND L. SOHEIDEMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco- Pipes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of means for cleansing a tobacco-pipe or removing the nicotine, &c., from the bowl and stem thereof, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a tobacco-pipe embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a detached portion thereof. Fig. 3 represent-s a section on line as :r, Fig. 2, on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a tobacco-pipe, which, excepting the features of our invention applied thereto, is of the usual construction.
B designates a semi-cylindrical or semi-tubular piece of metal or other suitable material fitting into the stem and bowl of the pipe so as to occupy the bottom and part of the sides of the stem and the lower part of the base of the bowl, and having its inner end closed, said piece being removable and so disposed that nicotine, &c., that may collect in the bowl and stem may be received by the piece, whereby it may be readily removed by the withdrawal of the latter, thus providing convenient means for clearing the pipe of such substance and cleaning the bowl and stem thereof. The outer end of the piece is notched or recessed, so that it may be engaged by a finger-nail; or the month end of the stem connected with the piece may be notched instead of the piece, (see dotted lines, Fig. 2,) so as to be removed together, if so desired. The inner end of the piece is flanged or provided with a lip O, which projects, so as to have its side in contact with the inner side of the bowl in such manner as to act as a guard on the inner end of the piece and serve to carry out the nicotine, &c., deposited on the portion of the piece within the bowl, and likewise scrape the portion of the bore of the stem unoccupied by the piece during the removal of the said piece. When the piece is withdrawn, it may be cleansed and afterward restored to the pipe for further service, it being understood that the location of said piece in operative position does not interfere with the service of the pipe.
As the inner end of the piece B occupies the base of the bore of the bowl and the lip 0 contacts with the wall of said bore opposite to the bore of the stem, the nicotine in the bowl is immediately directed into said piece, and also prevented from entering the portion of the bore at the base of the bowl between the lip O and wall of said bowl.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tobacco-pipe having a cleansing device consisting of a semi-tubular piece independent of the stem and mouth-piece and adapted to be removable from said stem and mouth-piece by being withdrawn through both of the same, the inner end of said cleansing device occupying the base of the bore and the bowl and extended into the wall of said bowl opposite the bore of the stem, and the outer end of said device being located at the outer end of the mouth-piece, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A tobacco-pipe having a cleansing de vice consisting of a semi-tubular piece independent of and removable therefrom by being withdrawn through the bore of both the stem and mouth-piece, the inner end thereof being formed with an upwardly-projecting lip flush with the inside of the bowl, said cleansing device when in position occupying the base of the bore of the bowl and having its outer end located at the outer end of the mouth-piece and formed with a downward projection or lip to be engaged in removing the device, substantially as described.
