G. H. MARKS. DIE PoR MAKING SIGKLES. No. 443,777. Patented Deo. 30, 1890.
NITED STATES FEICE.
DIE FOR MAKING SICKLES.
SPECIFICATIONformng part of Letters Patent No. 443,777', dated December 80, 1890.
Application filed July Z5, 1890.
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. MARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the township of East Whitby, county of Ontario, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the vfollowing is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My improvements relate to dies for making sickles; and they consist in certain new constructions by means whereof said dies are made more cheaply and are made capable of repair when Worn.
In the drawings, Figures l and 2 are face views of the upper and lower dies, respectively. Fig. 3 is a side view of the pair of dies slightly spaced apart, and Fig. 4 shows a section of a sickle adapted to the form of the die-faces shown in the other figures.
In the drawings,Ais the base of the upper die, provided with a tenori d, by means of which it is secured to its operating mechanism, and the upper die O is secured therein by means of its tenon c and key b. The die C is curved to the form of the sickle to be forged therein. rlhe lower die consists of a base B, provided with a tenon CZ, Wherebyit is secured upon its hed, and with a flange B', through which bolts e c e e are passed to secure the Serial No. 359,903. (No model.)
three curved strips f, g, and 7L, which constitute the operative face of this die. The stripf constitutes a rim rising above g and h to form the back of the sickle, while g and h together form the anvil of. this die and forge the face of the sickle. v
By the use of my improved dies it is Very easy and cheap to replace the anvil of the die B when it becomes worn without the necessity of sacrificing those parts which do not become worn so soon. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. rlhe die B, having a detachable anvil curved to the form of a sickle.
2. The die B, consisting of a base B and curved detachable anvil co m posed of the stri ps g and h, substantially as described.
3. A sickle-forming die B, consisting of a base B and the strips f, g, and h, curved to the form of a sickle and secured thereto by the bolts e. c e e or their equivalents.
4. The combination of the die C with the die B, which latter die has a built-up anvil composed of curved strips f, g, and h, secured to a base B, substantially as described.
CHARLES H. MARKS.
