UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH LEVI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,774, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed October 18, 1890. Serial No. 368,534- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH LEVI, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Fastenings for Garments, 001'- sets, Shoes, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to secure the two parts of a garment by a spring-coupling entering into a tubular or dome-shaped receiver upon the other part of the garment, the springs of the coupling acting uponlatches, and such latches are withdrawn by a cord connected to the spring.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section in enlarged size of the fastening. Fig. 2 is a crosssection at the line 00 as, and Fig. 3 represents the parts of the spring-latch detached.
The socket or cylinder A is of suitable size, and it may be an open tube-or provided with a head 2, closing one end, and there is a fastening device 3, preferably in the form of claws, that are spread laterally and passed through the fabric and clinched against a ring or flange 4, the fabric or material 13 being perforated for the end of the cylinder to pass through it, and there is an annular recess 5 around the interior of the tubularcoupling A. The portion 0, which is connected to the other part of the fabric, is hollow and of a size to pass freely into the tubular coupling A, and it is connected at its base with the other portion of the fabric or garment B in any suitable manner, preferably by a disk with claws passing through the fabric or garment and turned over the projecting flange 7 of the portion O. The portion 0 of the fastening is mortised for the catches D, which project at each side, and they are connected together by the spring E, which spring is in the form of a bow and within the portion 0 of the fastening, and there is a cord F connected with the center part of the spring E. This spring E is expansive, so that when the portion 0 of the coupling is pressed into the tubular portion A the latches D are compressed, and then they spring out into the annular recess 5 and hold the two parts of the coupling together, and when the fastening is to be opened and the two parts separated the cord F is drawn upon and the latches D withdrawn into the portion 0 of the coupling, so as to separate their ends from the annular recess 5 and allow the coupling 0 to be withdrawn from the tubular coupling A and the parts of the garment separated. lVith glove-fastenings this coupling A will be about the size of an ordinary button. For shoe-fastenings it will be made suffioiently large and strong, and for corsets and other garment-fastenings the coupling Will be sufficiently flat not to project objectionably from the under garment, and thereby interfere with the appearance of the outer garment. I have shown the latches D as triangular-shaped plates at the ends of the spring E. Said latches might, however, be a continuation of the ends of the wire E, bent to the shape shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
I claim as my invention A fastening for garments, made of a tubular coupling A, connected with one part of the garment and having an annular recess 5, the coupling 0, adapted to pass into the tubular coupling A, the latches D, projecting through mortises in the portion 0, and the
