Be it known that I, JAMES BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in -the county of Ramsey and State of Minne# ing-cable is capable of being revolved at different speeds; and it consists in the arrangement of the mechanism whereby the change of 'speed is accomplished or the motion stopped,
as hereinafter shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the pawl-actuating lever detached.
A is the base-frame, on which the cabledrum B is mounted by hanger or standard D D and provided with the usual ratchetteeth a and brake-rim a2.
E is an upright shaft journaled in the standard D, and to whose upper end the sweep F is attached.
Upon the drum B are two bevel-gears G G2 of different sizes, and upon the shaft E are two bevel-gears H H2. These gears H H2 are connected to the shaft E by a feather l), so that they may be moved upward and downward upon the shaft, but will at the same time revolve with the shaft. The gear H when elevated engages with the small gear G2, and the gear H2 when elevated engages with the larger gear G.
Beneath the gear H, fast upon the hori- Zontal member D2 of the frame D', is a cam` collar K, having two inclined cam-surfaces d d2, adapted to engage with similar camsurfaces cl2 d* on another cam-collar K2 beneath the gear H and loose upon the shaft E, while a similar cam-collar K3 is secured upon the lower member D3 of the standard 'tory manner.
D', and is provided with cam-surfaces d5 d5, adapted to engage with similar cam-surfaces d? cl2 on another cam-collar K4 beneath the gear H2. The function of these cam-collars is to elevate the gears H H2 when thc loose collars are oscillated beneath the hubs of the gears, and thus throw them into and out of mesh with the gears G and G2.
The cams on the collars are of peculiar construction and are adapted to produce certain peculiar movements to the gears H H2, so as to elevate one while depressing the other, and also to hold both the gears H H2 out of mesh with the Vgears G G2. To accomplish this, each cam-collar is formed with two projections with flat surfaces cl2, occupying about one-eighth of the circumference, and straight on one side at d10 and inclined on the other at CZ cl2 cl2d4,the inclined portions each occupying about one-eighth of the circumference. The remainder two surfaces d (i12 each occupies about one fourth of the surface. It will be seen, then, that when the two collars are in position and the loose collar turned upon the fixed collar a movement of one-eighth of a revolution may be obtained without raising the movable collar by the opposing inclines.
By arranging the inclines of the two sets of collars in reverse order the movable collars can be actuated by turning them back and forth in the same direction. Hence if levers be attached to the two movable collars and turned one-fourth of a revolution in one direction the collar K2 will elevate the gear H', while at the same time the collar K4 will depress the gear H2, or vice versa, and by reason of the flat surfaces d CP2 there is a point where both gears H H2 are held out of mesh with the gears G G2. This is a very important advantage, as I can thus accomplish all the required movements with one lever, eitherto change the speed or stop'the inachine.

N is a pawl, pivoted at m to the frame A and adapted to engage with the ratchet-teeth c. on the drum B.
N2 is a substantially horizontal lever, pivoted at m2 to the frame A and with one end m3 fitting through a hole in the pawl N', while the other end projects toward the gears Il H2, and is provided with a raised portion m", adapted to be acted upon by the arm M2 or other form of lever which operates the camcollars, so that when the arm Mi is oscillated it will force the end m4 of the lever downward, and by correspondingly elevating the other end cause it to throw the pawl N out of contact with the ratchet-teeth on the drum.
If it is desired to merely reverse the position of the cam-collars, the arm M2 will merely actuate the lever N2 and pass over it, allowing the pawl to immediately return to its contact with the ratchet-teeth; but it' it is desired to disengage both the gears H 112 from the gears G G2, which is done by holding the arln M2 in its central position,then the lower side of the arm M2 will, by resting upon the raised portion ym4 of the lever N2, hold the pawl N out of contact with ratchet-teeth on the drum B, which is the required position when the drum is disconnected from its driving-gearing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. In a hoistingmaehine,a drum B,l1aving gears G Gzof diierent sizes connected thereto, an upright shaft. E, carrying gears Il' H2, adjustable thereon but adapted to be revolved therewith, stationary collars K K3, having alternating cam-surfaces and fiat surfaces, and movable collars Y2K", having correspondingr opposing cam and flat surfaces,
and adapted to be alternately oscillatcd beneath said gears H H2 to alternately connect them with said gears G' Gi or to hold them disconnected thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a hoisting-machine,a drum B, having' gears G Giet' different sizes connected thereto and with ratchet-teeth d', an upright shaft E, carrying gears Il 112, adjustable thereon but adapted to be revolved therewith, stationary collars li' li, having alternating camsurlaces and tia-t surfaces, and movable collars K2 K4, having correspondingly-opposing cam and fiat surfaces, and with pins gin said movable collars, straps M', inclasping said movable collars, and with slots g' g2, iitting over said pins, and with arm M2, connecting said straps, pawl N', adapted to engage with the ratchet-teeth on said drum, pivoted lever N2, with one end in contact with said pawl and with the other end beneath said arm M2, whereby said pawl will be actuated by the oscillation of said arm and be placed in coaction with said cam-collars and gears, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
