DRIVING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,879, dated September 27, 1904;.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OAswELL' WATERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pryorcreek, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to driving mechanism for fan-blower and other like machines; and it consists of the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a fan-blower machine, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing a partial side elevation and partial longitudinal section of the driving mechanism. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the walking-beam, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the strap-couplings.

On the driving-shaft is a drum or sleeve 10, revolubly mounted on said shaft between two collars l1 and 12, provided with set-screws for fixing them to the shaft, the collar 12 also having a ratchet hub or surface 13, adapted to be engaged by pawls 14 upon the adjacent end of said sleeve 10, the construction being such that when the drum or sleeve is moved in a forward direction the pawls will engage the ratchet-head 13 and impart motion to the shaft and upon the rearward movement of the drum 10 the pawls will ride over the ratchet-teeth and allow the shaft to continue its movement in a forward direction. This construction of ratchet-sleeve and pawls provides a clutch connection between the fixed sleeve and drum, which allows the latter to have a rocking motion on the'drive-shaft-and to impart movement to the latter in one direction.
Mounted on a shaft or axle 15, suitably fixed to the frame 1, is a rocker 16, in form of a walking-beam, provided with forwardly and rearwardly extending arms 17 and 18, each of which is provided at its inner end with bearing-shoulders 19 and at its outer end with a holding-lug 20.
Connected to the drum or sleeve 10 and adapted to wind in opposite direction thereon are straps 21 and 22, which are provided at their free ends with couplings 23 and 24, each consisting of a segmentary curved frame formed of side pieces 25, end pieces 26, and an intermediate cross-bar 27. These couplings 23 and 24 detachably connect the straps 21 and 22 with the two arms 17 and 18, and, as shown in Fig. 2, this connection is made by slipping the free end of the coupling upon the arm until the inner end piece 26 thereof engages the under side of the arm and the adjacent portion of the side pieces engage the shoulders 19 and the cross-bar 27 lies upon the upper surface of the arm and engages the lug 20, whereby the coupling is held from downward and outward movement and yet may be readily disengaged by tilting upward'until the cross-bar 27 is removed from engagement with the lug 20, and thus drawing it outward longitudinally from the arm.
The rocker or walking-beam is adapted to be rocked or oscillated by means of an operating-lever 28, which is connected thereto by a pivot-bolt 29, whereby it is adapted to swing laterally toward either of the standards 4. This adaptability of the lever to swing laterally allows the operator to reach out some distance with one hand on either side of the blower to pick up tools or to perform other work while continuing to operate the lever with the other hand, thus avoiding the necessity of letting go the lever and stopping the machine under such contingencies. The rear end of this lever is formed or provided with a counterweight 30, which is adapted to reverse the movement of the lever-that is, to restore it to its normal position.
In operation it will be readily understood that by working lever 28 up and down the rocker 16 will be oscillated and in turn impart a vibratory back-and-forth movement to the drum 10, which on its forward movement will be engaged with the ratchet 13 by the pawls 14: and revolve the shaft 2 in a forward direction and on its rearward movement will turn independently of said shaft, as the pawls will ride freely over said ratchet-surfaces. A forward motion of the driving-shaft will be communicated,through the gears 5, 6, and 7,to the shaft 3, and from said counter-shaft motion will be imparted to the fan-shaft 4 through the connecting-belt 8. The fly-wheel or bal' ance-wheel 9 will act by its momentum to' keep the shafts revolving in a forward direction.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention will be readily understood, and it will be seen that a construction of blower-operating mechanism is provided which may be- Patent, is-
1. The combinationwith a driving-shaft, of a clutch-drum upon the driving-shaft, a clutch connection between said drum and shaft, a
rocker provided with arms, a lever for operating the rocker, straps connected to the drum, and couplings connected to the straps and having detachable interlocking connection with the arms of the rocker, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a driving-shaft, a clutch-drum upon the driving-shaft, a clutch connection between said drum and shaft, a rocker provided with arms, each having a shoulder at its inner end and a lug at its outer end, a lever for operating the rocker, straps connected to the drum, and couplings detachably connecting the ends of the straps to the arms of the rocker, each of said couplings comprising an open segmental frame provided with end pieces and an intermediate cross-bar, said frame adapted to straddle the arm of the rocker and engage the inner shoulder thereof with one of its end pieces bearing against the under side of the arm, and its cross-piece engaging the lug thereof, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a driving-shaft, a clutch-drum upon the driving-shaft, a clutch connection between said drum and shaft, a rocker provided with arms, a counterweighted lever having a pivotal connection with the rocker to swing laterally, straps connected to the drum, and couplings having an interlocking connection with the arms of the rocker, and detachably connecting the straps thereto.
