MOLDERS FLASK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,704, dated December 30, 1890.
A lication filed November 1'7, 1890. Serial No. 371,656. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. learns, of
Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and
in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molders Flasks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to appliances for form- KO ing metal castings; and my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a molders flask constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an irregular horizontal section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective :0 view of one of the flask-sections.
plan view showin g a modified arrangement of the flask-sections.
The objects of my invention are to produce a sectional form of flask the walls of which 2 5 can be readily varied in shape to accord with variations in the form of the casting to be produced, and at the same time shall possess an equal degree of strength and rigidity to that possessed by the ordinary forms of mold- 3 ers flasks. These results I attain by virtue of the construction which I will now proceed to describe.
Referring to thedrawings, A A designate a number of flat rectangular flask-sections,
each of which is formed at one end with a continuous elongated vertical socket a, the outer side of which isformed with a continuous longitudinal opening a, which lies opposite the point of juncture of the socket with the body of the section, and the axis of which is slightly inclined to the axisof the bod y A. At its opposite end each of these sections is formed with a continuous vertical elongated head a the external contour of which corresponds to the internal contour of the socket to and both sockets and heads extending the full height of the sections A. At its inner portion, near one end thereof, each socket is formed with a transverse opening a while the outer portion of each head a is formed near one of its ends with a transverse recess Fig. 4 is a a which when the sections are properly connected registers with the opening a in the adjacent socket a. When the partsare thus assembled, keys b are inserted into the openings a and extend through the recesses a and thus rigidly connect the two adjacent sections A. It is obvious that in connecting these sections together the heads 0, are in serted from above or below into the sockets a, so as to bring the openings a and recesses a into alignment with each other, as just described; and it will be seen that by this means the flask-walls can be continued to any desired length, and that the Walls thus constructed are as close and rigid as though composed of only asingle piece. Furthermore, it will be seen that such walls may be either of straight form, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or of a curved outline, as shown in Fig. 4. 7o
W'hen the walls of the flask are set at an angle with each other, as shown in Fig. 1, at one end of each wall is connected a section C, which corresponds in all respects with the sections A, excepting that its socket c is formed with an opening 0, the axis of which is oblique to the body portion of the section, the keys Z2 being used as before.
It is frequently desirable to make a number of separate castings in the same flask, and in such event one or more pairs of sections D are placed opposite each other in the walls of the flask, and these sections D correspond with the previously-described sections A, excepting that on one side and preferably midway of its length each section Dis formed with a continuous vertical head (Z, connected to the body of the section by a rib ct or with a continuous vertical socket (Z the axis of whose opening is oblique to the section D. In this event one or'more intermed ate walls are located in the flask, the said intermediate walls being each composed of a number of sections A, with the sockets CL and heads a of their end sections engaging the heads cl 5 and sockets (Z just referred to. Obviously two or more of these walls may be placed one above the other, so as to form a cope and drag, and in any event a strong, rigid, and durable structure is provided, as above pointcd out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A inoldcrs flask comprising a number of sections having each a continuous elongated vertical head and a continuous vertical elongated open socket, substantially as set forth.
2. In a niolders flask, a number of sections having each a continuous elongated vertical head provided with a transverse recess, and a continuous vertical elongated open socket having a transverse opening, in combination with keys set into said openings and recesses, substantially as set forth.
A molders flask comprising a number of
